That is an honest mistake Dave. I had the bass for a few years before I realized that the fingerboard was painted.

Ted, I guess the only ebony fret board on a Ric bass was the 4002???

Ted, can you do me a favor and measure the approximate distances from the bridge saddle to the middle of each PU?

After measuring the my 4004 compared to my 75 4001 (and being surprised) that pic of your 4002 seems pretty close to my Laredo...

Ed, I think that the pickups on a 4002 are spaced like on a Fender Jazz.

prompted me to take out the J and actually physically measure. The scale of th J is about an inch longer than the Ricks. In terms of % of scale length from the NUT, my three basses:

1975 4001 (1/2" spacing): 73% N, 87% B
2004 4004: 75% N, 90% B
1992 MIJ J Bass: 81% N, 91% B

Hmmm, all 3 pretty different.

Ted, no rush...just a pet interest to me.

Don't take it out for me unless it's real easy to get to (like my J Bass...right there in it's case against a wall - nothing in the way but my other basses - well the 4001 is out, but that empty case is actually up against that wall!)

to accurately check pickup placement instead of inches use harmonics ... for instance the ric neck pickup usually resides right under the double octave harmonic ... and the treble pickup for a 4001/4003 resides between where the jazz pickups would be and it has a harmonic above it as well ...

Treble ~2 1/2"
Bass ~ 5 7/8"
