Yes, original or in the line-up that made the first record - original recording line-up?

Everyone has a valid point and I agree Gary I should have quantified my points, as you say I believe most would class original as being the line up that made the first recording, technically original again is the line up that first form the band under that name.
Buddy is totally correct that Best played in the Beatles when they were known under that name and clearly because of what they became the story is well documented.

BTW... another situation: a band was famous, then lost popularity, then, with a new member coming in & one of the old ones leaving, reached dizzying heights... will they (i mean an old member who has left and the new member) both count as originals - what's your opinion?

Yes Dane, surprising number of times I have seen bands advertised as The Original .....
Sheena best example I can think of here in UK to empasise your point is The Tremeloes, as Brian Poole and The Tremeloes bass guitar was Brian Howard and initially Graham Scott was lead but Rick Westwood replaced the latter in 62 and is still with the band today. Len "Chip" Hawkes replaced Howard about 66 and when they spilt from BP became lead vocalist, of course they went on to become very popular in their own right.
