I think it's just a piece of wood used to hold or hang the body while it was being painted.

A stick for holding the body while spraying it. Look at a Fender neck pocket, you'll see the "shadow" of the paint stick.

The shape is not quite right on that Ric copy. If JH and Co. were not on vacation this week I'm sure it would have been taken off ebay by now.
