Rush R30 DVD
Just got the DVD last week and I watched it about three times so far, both DVD`s and extras.
I always thought the Tone Geddy got when playing the Ric was better than the Jazz and once again I found this was true to my ears with this DVD.
Especially with the older stuff, the Rick sounds so full, with tons of mids and richness to the Tone, compared to the Jazz he uses these recent years. Although Tom Sawyer was recorded with the Jazz ( which sounds pretty amazing ), I find Geddy sounds way better with the Ricky.

Stephane, I agree with your thoughts regarding Geddy's tone. I would love to see him pull out the Rick again. It's amazing to me that he only used the Rick for 10 of the band's 30 years. But, the main point is that the most relevant Rush recordings were with the 4001 and he will always be remembered and pictured with a 4001.
BTW Stephane, you're a good guy but please don't use the term "Ricky".....just seems wrong.

I'm so thankful that I got to see Rush when I did. I'm only 36 but I saw them in '82 during the Signals tour. That was the last tour that both Geddy and Alex used doublenecks on Xanadu...the last time The Camera Eye was played live, the only tour that Countdown was played, and up until this past tour the last tour that By Tor was played. Also, the last time that Neil played the drum solo in the middle of YYZ. It really was a transitional time because MTV had just taken over and it seems like everything changed to bubblegum music. To me, Grace Under Pressure was ok...but Signals was the last "great" Rush album for me. Meaning that every song flowed into the next one and I didn't have to skip one. Just my opinion though.

Scott, I agree with you 100% on Signals being the last "great" Rush album. Some people here think they haven't made ANY great albums!
But I think when they switched producers, from Terry Brown to Peter Henderson, then things drifted into an area that I wasn't that intrigued by, soundwise. Still went to the shows, though.
Ged's bass sound started not interesting me when he went Steinberger and Wal. I personally do not like the recorded sound of the Wal on the albums he played it on. I do not like the Wal, At All.
My first Rush show was at the beginning of Permanent Waves tour, so I think you know what my favorite 3 albums are. (PW, Moving Pictures and Signals), but I love all of the old stuff too.

On the DVD: I thought it was great. Loved the extras.

Steve, we're in the same exact ballpark. I loved the "music" that was Power Windows and Hold Your Fire but the Wal tone was not, and is not for me. I never liked it. I've seen them every tour since the Signals tour so I'm not a "Fly By Night" fan here.
I think Rush's creative peak was 2112 through Signals. You just can't get any better than that IMHO. I suspect that MTV had an influence on any band because there had to be a video to accompany any music if it was to get any airplay. This flies into everything that Rush had ever stood for but, it must have had an influence. I respect and like everything after that but didn't fully get into them again until they finally got back to basics on Counterparts.
