Okay okay... personally I think that those little Hofners are toys (Just MHO... my first bass in 1976 was a 500/1), and Rics are way superior to them. But as a guess of what it would fetch on eBay, I have no doubt that the Hofner will bring at least 50 times what Squire's Ric would. I don't think there is a single guitar or bass that are worth even half of Macca's Hofner.

Sorta a dumb topic to speculate on neither one would go up on ebay in a million years if anything to a museum or an auction house.

So lets be realistic and hope that in our lifetimes we don't have to see either happen.

yeah... the hofner would pull in WAYYY more than the ric. The beatles as a band had far more influence than Yes ever did... and hofner type designs were and still are called the "beatles bass". I even think paul's ric would pull in WAYYY more than Chris's bass.

Hi Ken, you may be right about the ebay angle, but I can envision a very likely scenario where in "our" lifetime we will see the Hofner, and or the 4001 lefty up for grabs.

Realistically, PM is well into his 60's. Notice a 50% drop in Beatles on the planet lately?

The second Mrs. is much younger than PM and arguably not as connected to the whole "Beatle" thing due to her age.(Life has not been kind to first Beatle wives either)It appears that #2 has a singleminded obsession with helping humanity, such as the landmine clearing issue. Noble as it is, it would appear she has diminished consideration for the whole Beatle/McCartney music worship thought process. Have you noticed PM running around signing guitars to be sold as signature models to the masses. And he has signed a bunch of them, copies of the various types he uses. Guess where that money is going and who is behind it? #2 for her save humanity issues. If something were to happen to Sir Paul, God forbid, I would submit that #2 who has a time/interest gap toward the instruments, would look at their sale as a fund raising opportunity. What better way to use their value than to serve mankind? I do not see her handing these over to a museum for people to stumble in and gawk at.

As to ebay, maybe, maybe not. Have you seen the Barrett-Jackson clown show? (I love it) Used to be the upper crust would gather in dark quite auction house to throw around big money. Not so in the collector car world. The baby boomers are crushing the old school members, on a national stage to boot. I would think this is the same crowd who would go stupid for Beatle wares. Hmmm....kinda sounds like an ebay auction.

But I digress, it's purely speculative at best and a touch morbid.

My initial thought was whether the CS or PM would be more desired if available. It would appear the Hofner is the clear favorite, except in my own twisted world.

Remember the first Hofner McCartney had, with the pick ups near the neck. That bass was the one PM used in the Beatles' early days. Just think what THAT bass would go for now, had it not been stolen before the Beatles split up. Macca's 4001S would fetch much more than Squire's Ric too IMO. As long as Paul is alive though, his instruments won't be sold I believe.

Clapton's strat "Blackie" went for over $900,000 at auction for his Crossroads charity.

None of the Beatle guitars have gone up for auction. George's estate owns all of his guitars, Yoko owns all of John's guitars and they are in the Lennon Museum in Tokyo.

If Paul decided to auction his Hofner for "No More Mines" or whatever charity, I would expect it to go for a couple million at least. No other band has been as influential as The Beatles and no other guitars but Hofner bass, the Lennon Rickenbacker 325s and the Harrison Rickenbacker 360/12 are as iconographic as "Beatle" instruments.

As kool as it would be to own one of these basses. If I owned it Id be scared to play it... and Id just want to hang it up on the wall. But... Id have a hard time having it and not wanting to paly it. Id be so confused. Id spend a month just looking at it. Trying to decide what to do. It would drive me crazy. Id have to sell the thing just so i dont lose my mind.
