Nice job Nick!

A little bit about Paul's Jazz Bass. I believe it is a '66, but that wasn't the only year for the oval tuners. My '65 has them, and I believe they can be seen on Jazz's through '68. '66 was the first year for binding on the neck and about mid way through the dot markers were switched to blocks.

Nick, considering your age I think your site is stellar! It would be so even for a person much older. When I was your age my only accomplishments were crusin' the same girls houses' over and over. Today they would call it stalking.

Terrific work, and quite obviously considerable time and effort went into your project.

Haha. Mr. Hall was very friendly.

I am allowed to use the copyrighted photos, but the problem was (and is) I'm not sure which ones they are.

So, I've just put the copyright phrase under every photo that has a Rickenbacker guitar in it!

If I shouldn't do that, let me know, people!

Nick, as I said before keep doing what you are doing until you get sick of it. True business professionals like John Hall will steer you in the right direction instead of threatening you with law suits. I was selling plaster Star Trek castings in 1992/3. I had a huge article written about me and my shop and a picture of Star Trek stuff in the background. A week later I got an order from Paramount Pictures to cease production.
I did and all was well. If the dogs are after you, you'll find out first.

Hmmm...I was thinking...

Maybe I shouldn't have put that Rickenbacker phrase under ALL the pictures. Because, say, what if a fan took a picture of John Lennon? Is it still copyright? I don't want someone else to visit the site and say, "Hey, that's my picture!" I just want everyone to be happy.

I mean, I didn't think it would matter and all, since it's non-profit and I'm not getting anything out of it.

Well, I'm not going to argue, Nick, and I wasn't slamming you for your age or possible naivete. As I read the narrative on Paul's Hofner and Rick basses, the information, and the way it was phrased, seemed awfully familiar. I'm not accusing you, just cautioning you. I wouldn't want a fan to get crunched by lawyers, and just wanted to let you know that it does happen. I hadn't looked in your "about . . ." section and didn't expect to see attributions or permissions there. Perhaps an "acknowledgments" page or section would be a good idea. Just trying to help, so please don't take offense. I'm on your side, but I just have an eye for this sort of thing being in the business.

And I like the site!

Thanks, Paul! I'll consider an "Acknowledgements" page. The thing was, the template I used had only six button options...so I had to decide what I wanted on each button!

Nick: Very nicely done. I have a 16 year old son who surprised the bejesus out of me a few weeks ago by producing more than 300 pages of a continuing story he had written over the last two years. I had no idea he was capable of this type of work. I wish I had had that kind of ambition at 16. Keep honing your web skills. Do be careful, however, with copyrights. It can be tough with photos -- especially those appearing on websites -- because, as you point out, who knows where they came from originally? And tracking them down can be virtually impossible. But don't assume you're "small potatoes." There are rafts of lawyers who specialize in copyright infringement. Safest course is, if you can't determine where the photo came from, don't use it. Maybe we are too litigious, too protective, too unforgiving these days, but that won't protect you if someone decides to sue. A friend of mine once used a Fred Rogers soundalike in a promo for his band's new record, and friendly old "Mr. Rogers" came after them with teeth bared (or at least his lawyers did). Consider this -- you may someday become so proficient at website building that people will start borrowing your work. Flattering, sure. But ultimately wrong. Still - nice work.

You're definitely right, that would be the safest course. The only thing is, and I'm being completely honest, if I went by that, I'd have no website! I'm not being sarcastic, but it's very true. Over the years, Beatle photos have spread around the internet like wildfire, and it really would be impossible to track down the copyright holders.

Nick: Yes, impossible. But honest. The older you get, you'll be confronted with these types of choices more and more. How you handle them is up to you. And of course if all of us were scrupulously honest in all things, what would we talk about? I'm not chastising you -- just preparing you for reality. OOOh, I hate it when someone does that.
