Brian's comment about technique rings true to me. With my Laredo I can dig in very hard and get what I call a "reversed slap" sound...very unique among my three basses. I also find that there's plenty of growl with the bridge PU only.

Nate ... some of the newer basses have one volume, one blend, and one or two tone controls ... a 4003/4001/4004 could be wired this way ... it would be reversable ... in fact now that I am thinking about it I will have to try it on a 4004 bass ... it could be the best of both worlds ... a master volume and a a way to blend the pickups ...

"a master volume and a a way to blend the pickups"

That may not be the best way to go on a passive instrument. Would there be too much loading on the pickups?
