Broken String

I wonder if anyone cares to comment on this picture I took just minutes ago when my E string broke.

Ball end:

It's only the second time a string broke on my Rickenbacker, the last time it was because the string was very old and it broke while tuning it.

This time I'm not too sure what happened. Is this a defect in the string? It was put on Christmas day so I find it early for a string to break.

For what it's worth I was bending while it happened.

Might have had a nick in the wire. A weak spot to be sure! I had that happen once, the strings were still quite new, only a week or two old.

1979 370, Erny Ball regular slinky.

On their website they say they will replace defective strings but I don't really care that much. I just found it odd.

I haven't been playing my 650 D for a while (back on bass for the last year and a half), but I broke A LOT of D strings on that guitar right before I "became" a bass player again...

Used Ernie Ball's for a LONG time before I got the Dakota...so I'm not really sure if it was bad strings or what. My guess is that it was - some years ago the guitarist I play with had a rash of broken D's when he got a 12 pack of D'Addario.

Still, if you were bending, you might have gone a little too far. Especially if they were a different tension and/or guage than you're used to. If they were your normal strings, then it's probably a bad string.

Sounds like a nick or crimp in the string.
Or could be a burr in the tailpiece slot.
