Umbrella Man

Hi All, despite a very quiet forum I offer a new page - this time about their first Liberty (UK) single: Umbrella Man

I can't understand why it has gone so quite, I feel a article coming on Michael

Why was the Liberty recording contract conditional on the Searchers NOT playing on the single "Umbrella Man"?There must be an interesting piece of history to explain that one.The drumming seems to be in the action style of John Blunt but we understand it was just a session musician imitation.

Can't tell you the reason but I try to ask Frank Allen via Wendy Burton.

Here's Frank's answer

It wasn`t a case of not being allowed. We discussed it with the producer, Kenny Young, and he thought it might give a better 'feel' and be more efficient. He could pre-arrange things the way he envisaged them and it would take less time as there wouldn`t be the need to rehearse the routines for days and days. In the end it wasn`t really a good idea.
Frank

Thanks to Wendy

No, it wasn't. I always thought that "Umbrella Man" was a good song, but that the session band playing on it just kind of went through the motions. No guts, no soul, nothing, just boring, routine session playing. Those session players were a little too professional for their own good. I love The Searchers' vocals on it, though. Thanks for the new page, Michael.
