TV Knobs??

John, I think that David has my '59 315 and I have his '60 310. The great MARC mix up, ha ha.

Oh yeah, yours is the one he mounted the Floyd Rose system on, I keep forgetting. It really looks good now with the skull and crossbones decal on the body.

Ron, my '58 325 has the original metal knobs on it. The kind Lennon's had before they changed it to four controls with oven knobs. They used the metal knobs on a lot of early Combo guitars and lap-steels. I've got one of the newer type TV knobs that has Skokie, Illinois on it but it's got the allen screw instead of the old type slot- head screw for fastening. Are both of yours the slot-head type Ron? If they are I would think they're both original.

Remember that these set screws are not proprietary; they're available from stock in virtually any hardware store in the country, so it's possible to convert to slot from Allen and vice-versa very easily.

I hate to say it, but I just found a set of four TV knobs with normal slotted screws in my parts box- and I'm pretty sure they're reissue. ...so that may not be a determining factor.

I don't recall ever purchasing a set of vintage knobs, nor do I recall swapping oven knobs on any guitars.

Tony, some have said that the early 325V59s had knobs from the 'old days' on them, but I can't say for sure...

I once had a early ('88) 325v59 and it had the slotted screws.

Mind you, Rickenbacker could have had these in the parts bin for 25-30 years and used originals on the early reissues. They keep stuff. I was there in '98 and they had Van Ghents in a box.

That's a theory. I used to buy stuff direct from the factory from that blue form in the late nineties- so that's when these would likely have been purchased. ...they could be lingering old stock parts.

I tried to buy some of those Van Ghents when I heard they were still around, but they wouldn't do it (or maybe they didn't have anymore).

I think John W. and I snapped up the last NOS sets of VG's about 6 years ago for $60/set (or was it $80...).
