Boy, is that a sore spot.
I tried to get "381V69" from California DMV.
They turned me down claiming that it would offend some folks.
I sent them a Rick catalog copy, showing my guitar model as being legit, and telling them how dumb they were being, especially considering that their reply came from PO Box 48069 Sacramento CA. I offered to come to Sacramento and play a song for them on my 381V69.
I also sent copies of both their silly letter and my response to same, to John Hall and Click and Clack the Tappet Brothers.
Three weeks later, I received, not the license plates, but another letter insisting that they would not honor my request.
Now I go onto their website and they state: "69 on a license plate is only granted in the case of a vehicle of that year of manufacture."
So I just gave up and ordered "60 CAPRI" which should arrive any day now.

My Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow had "SOD OFF".
It made it through the DMV's approval process with no problems. My explanation to them for the phrase?
I told them it meant "Leave me alone."
They accepted this without question.
Those of you in the UK know its derivation.
I had a '67 Sunbeam--one of 2 British sports cars with fins (the other being the Daimler Dart).
Its plate said "TAILFIN"
My Citroen-Maserati had hydraulic suspension. Every time it was parked, it would gradually sink down onto the stops, so that it was about 3" from the ground. Then when it was started in the morning, it would quickly raise up to normal height--about 5" in 5 seconds.
Its personalized plate read: "LAZARUS".
I wish I had pictures of them handy...
