What's cool about this is there is no routing, no cutting, no Ric mutilation ... also is does some hum canceling because it is a neck jazz pickup ... I used a seymour duncan hot jazz ... I will try a 1/4 pound jazz ... I wired it into the neck volume control ...
You could also wire it vol, vol, vol, tone ...
The real cool thing here is it is totally reversable ....
the benefits ... it adds a little treble bite, it it cancels some of the hum ...
Cool mod, would it work on a 4 string? I see that is a 4003s5. I assume it was mounted in there with out its plastic cover housing. Correct? And did you screw it in there somehow or is it just held in place?? I've read somewhere that Bartolini made a pickup made just for such a mod, and it is shaped like the mute so you could just screw it in there with the original bridge mute knobs...I have never seen one or a pic of one.
That space on a 4 and 5 string is the same size ... so it will work the same on both ...
The pickup fits pretty tight ... I had to clip the corners a little ... then I put 2 small pieces of foam rubber in there to keep it from rattling around ... basically it is friction fitted ...
It effects the tone less then expected ... the biggest change is when I run the jazz and the toaster by themselves without the high gain ... the sound is kinda a little more nasally ...
and yes you have to remove the pickup cover ... I think I will try putting a bridge jazz pickup in there ... to get rid of the humbucking/reverse winding effect and get a more single coil sound ..
The thing I like most is the absence of the 2 big screws ...
Jeff: Please take note that your generous admin person has increased the size to 20k. Actually if you are precise any file under "exactly" 22k will work. On a number of software packages they exact file size may not be noted and while a program indicates that your file is 22K it may indeed by somewhat larger. So using the 20k guideline is safe.

So I have the toaster, the high gain, and the seymour duncan hot jazz pickup ... It's sort of like the bite you get with the .0047 capaciter but more versatile ... lots of attack ...
nobody even notices the modification unless I point it out ...
I am considering a possible mod like that on my 92' 4003 JG. But, I am considering looking for a Jazz bass pickup with one long pole piece across the top so all of the strings are in the magnetic field, that is, if there is one. If I can find a Bartolini 6JH, that pickup may be the one for me...
