Personalized license plates
I think I remember reading somewhere that Illinois has the greatest percentage of vanity plates, for that exact reason.
When I was in grad school at the U of I, I drove a 1978 Subaru Brat. I was very close to getting the vanity plate IMA BRAT (which was available because the Brat had a "B" class plate) but being that it had no numbers, it would have cost extra every year - and in grad school, there is no extra money!
I should get a vanity palte out here for my Honda Insight. These would be very arcane:
The first has a connection to a certain food chain found Missouri eastward, and the second has to do with a certain science-fiction show.
This one is a little less arcane:

This is a plate that was on my first car in 1983, and Paul W, this probably wouldn’t be allowed where you are from. Because it is a Niagara Falls plate, it was issued by the Niagara County Commissioner--- in Niagara Falls, the plates go up to NF-3000 or so. When I got my first vehicle, a 73 VW bus, my father said he’d get me a low-number NF plate. He got this plate, the lowest number available. It is rare that you see any lower than this. I had it for a few years while I was on my father’s insurance policy. After I went on my own, the plate stayed on one of his cars. We’d always joke back and forth about how he had to sign the plate over to me, as he got the plate for my first car. He always would respond, “Like hell, that plate is mine!” Since about 1993 until this past summer, it has been on one of his cars. He signed it over to me a few months ago, and I was thrilled to get my first plate back.
Incidentally, when he got the plate, he was unaware of any connotations. And all through the years, that has never been an issue in my mind, either. Most people just ask how the heck I got such a low number.
The following picture was taken today from just outside of my office. The American Falls can be seen about 200 yards behind.

I was there last summer with a lady from Munich, we had tics for the tour under the falls, and with 2 hours to kill she wanted to see the American side, so off we go, and then spent an hour at U.S. immigration so she could get a 3 month temp. visa, and then the U.S. immigration guy was hitting on her, finally asked me for I.D., and I showed him an expired passport, told me I looked pretty good for being expired and then we spent a couple of hours in N.Falls N.Y. and then went back to the under the falls tour. What a gas!!!!

"MSTBRYT" = Must Be Right; this is part of the slogan for Steak-n-Shake: "In sight, it must be right"; remember that this would be on a Honda Insight ...
"TYPE 40" = Type 40; this is a reference to Doctor Who's TARDIS (space-time traveling device), which is refered to in the series as a Type 40 TARDIS.
