I debated just running a separate preamp with optimal settings for my 4003 but I'm trying to downsize my rig so I decided against it. I had decent results using my footswitchable EQ on my Ampeg SVP-Pro preamp to tweak things for a better sound but it still wasn't what I was after. It either sounded OK with both 4003 and 4004 or pretty good with one and so-so with the other. If one sounded great the other wasn't acceptable to me.
I grew to like the comfort and playability of the 4004 plus the clean lowend advantage (IMO) tone wise of the 4004 made the decision pretty easy for me. I still love 4003's.....just not as much.
