Home stereo show-off

Post by sinisterick »

O.K. I've done enough browsing at the forum now to tell I can't possibly compete with some of the fantastic Ric collections out there. This isn't about the most toys winning (well, maybe just a little), I'm just curious about what people are listening to. Here is the chance to show everybody what you got!

I might have a slight channel imbalance problem as she's listening a little off center.

Floor to cieling speakers? Yikes! Does your room extend 100 feet? ;)

Nothing too special in my home. My living room is quite small, so the ported 5" drivers/1.5" tweeters sound great -though they're on stands. 4" surround speakers and a great Aiwa subwoofer round it out. I am always amazed at how good it sounds. Receiver is a Kenwood 100W A/V.

Just observed one of the tweeter dust caps has been pushed in by one of my twin nieces just last night. Grrrr!

Sony SACD 5.1 here. 5 tiny speakers about 3" cube (on stands) and a sub hidden away. I can't believe that so much crystal clear sound can come from such small speakers. It blows your head off.

Late '70s Sansui AU-717, TU-717, Klipsch speakers, new Sony 300-CD jukebox, Sansui EQ and Sansui tape deck.

Looking for a Beogram linear turntable like the one in my house in Brasil, and about to pull the trigger on a Studer-Revox A77.

All this stuff was high-end in '78, still specs out amazing well today and is finally affordable for the Common Man.

Fanfare!

Very Kool. I grew up in Chicago, the capital of jukebox/pinball machine manufacturing. Mob connections? NAH.

Bally, now gambling casino and health club megastars, got their start a block from my old house. Their factory is now $$$residential condos.

I had a friend back in the early '70s who worked as a pinball machine tester for Williams. He made a decent paycheck playing pinball all day long.

At night he would hustle pinball for about 5X his salary...

I have a fully functional 1956 Wurlitzer Centennial Model juke box. It needs some TLC, in the form of replacement of all the electrolytic capacitors and perhaps a new set of tubes (valves).

I bought it for a mere pittance about twenty years ago.

...I thought I was Bally table King, but I just handed my pinball crown to him...

Chicago, I was only there last week (as you probably know from another thread).

Brian, I paid £30 for mine 25 years ago.

I haven't yet listened to SACD yet-very curious though. Does it really sound better than regular cd's other than the 5.1 surround? I think I remember the Sansui stuff--black integrated amp and tuner with silver knobs? If so, i've noticed they're pretty collectable. I remember drooling over the Revox stuff too including the A77. I remember there was a killer open reel deck model A700 too. I would be more than happy with the A77 though. As far as the B & O turntable, does it need to operate on foreign or U.S voltage? My speakers aren't "niece friendly"- they have 5000 volts D.C inside. No current capability though so it won't kill you but if you pushed a metal object through the grill cloth you would not be happy-feels like getting zapped by a spark plug. As you noticed too they are 7'11" tall-generally not wife friendly either. They are electrostatic speakers-2 inches thick and produce sound using a completely different technology than typical speakers-no woofers, no tweeters.

The List:

Acoustat 2+2 Electrostatic speakers in front
Polk CS400 center speaker
Boston THX rear speakers
Sony ES series receiver and CD changer
Sony DVD player
Carver tuner and power amp- from the good old days when they were made in the USA and BOB Carver still owned the company.
Nakamichi Auto reverse cassette player-flips the tape to do the auto reverse rather than flipping the heads!
Dual 701 turntable

I know!-I need a bigger TV.

If anyone is interested in alternate speaker technologies (electrostat,ribbon,planar...) go to:

Har. Like that Nakamichi--had one back in the '80s. I went through the whole tall speaker thing and my place in SA has a pair which are not doing well in that climate.

The Sansuis you remember are from the early '70s and were great quality. In '77 Sansui kicked things up several notches with this line of AU and TUs. They are underpriced audiophile classics. In '78, I could not afford the top of line 717s, so I opted for 217s (bottom of same line). They also are in my place in Brasil and look and perform like new, 28 years later.

The 717s:

SACD = a much fuller sound. You know when you listen to a DVD in 5.1 Dolby digital then you listen in dts and the difference is WOW!!! Well it is the same with normal CD and then SACD.

I still use a ROTEL RA611 (which I bought new in 1975) for a monitor amp in my studio.

Peter,

I traded a small amount of used bricks for the jukebox. LOL Seriously. I got the bricks for nothing it just cost me a few pennies in gas.

According to this 2002 article they are worth about £10,000 in the UK.
