These are made in Japan. The quality of Gretsches these last two years has been very good. Expect a few new seconds to turn up on eBay by mid-summer at $1400-1500.00. They should vaporize pretty quickly.
“I say in speeches that a plausible mission of artists is to make people appreciate being alive at least a little bit. I am then asked if I know of any artists who pulled that off. I reply, 'The Beatles did.”

I like it, I like it. (The Gretsch, not the Red Baron).
Though I think the pickguard is an affectation. Casady’s bass also has a pickguard and Jack wouldn’t be caught dead playing with a pick. (In fact I've seen him screw off the guard and play without it.)
I also used to be a big fan of the Les Paul shape. The first bass I ever fell in love with was a bright red Les Paul with white trim that I saw in a small music store on the West Side of Manhattan. I went back the next day to buy it but it was already gone.
So, the first bass after I bought after I started playing again (35 years later) was a sunburst Epiphone Les Paul.
The second and third basses I bought were both short scale and now I’ll never go back. So I sold the Epiphone.
