Retail list is $2675. I have a real weakness for Les Paul-ish short scale basses (Hagstrom Swede, Guild M85). I might have to look into this one - I've heard the quality of the new Gretsch's is very good. Are these made in Japan?

These are made in Japan. The quality of Gretsches these last two years has been very good. Expect a few new seconds to turn up on eBay by mid-summer at $1400-1500.00. They should vaporize pretty quickly.

Here's a little something that caught my eye today:

I'm a WW1 buff, obviously.
It's entitled "Red Baron", in case anyone didn't get that.

A little pricey at $27,000!
An idea for a refin of my old 4001, though.

I like it, I like it. (The Gretsch, not the Red Baron).
Though I think the pickguard is an affectation. Casady’s bass also has a pickguard and Jack wouldn’t be caught dead playing with a pick. (In fact I've seen him screw off the guard and play without it.)

I also used to be a big fan of the Les Paul shape. The first bass I ever fell in love with was a bright red Les Paul with white trim that I saw in a small music store on the West Side of Manhattan. I went back the next day to buy it but it was already gone.
So, the first bass after I bought after I started playing again (35 years later) was a sunburst Epiphone Les Paul.
The second and third basses I bought were both short scale and now I’ll never go back. So I sold the Epiphone.
