Best same bill I ever read about the the Kinks, a week or so after the release of Arthur, opening for the Who on the latter's second US leg of their Tommy tour, atl least in Chgo. I can't think of a better double bill supporting two better LPs.

My first show ever was Yes in the mid to late 70s. They came to Memphis and I was able to see them a couple of times when I was living there. I also got to see Eric Clapton, The Commodores (who had Taste of Honey as one of their opening acts - they did "Boogie, Oogie, Oogie" and even though I wasn't a big fan, that bass player was phenomonal and pretty to boot). I also saw The Knack, Rush and a bunch of others but one of the best shows I ever saw in those late 70s days was UFO. I got to see them three times, never as the headliner, and each time they stole the show. What a great live band.

After moving to Denver I got to see Tom Petty (twice), Bruce Springsteen, Kim Richey, Lucinda Williams, Jay Farrar, The Black Crowes and The Old 97s. The Old 97s were incredibly good live, too. Looking at the lsists, though, I need to get out more. ;)

Yea, Ian Dury and the Blockheads.
One of my all time favorites. Sadly, I never saw one of his shows.
Buy it before someone else does.

Harley: I've never seen the Old 97's live, but their lead guitarist once auditioned for a friend's band (early 1990's). Also I saw the Old 97's bass player (Murray Hammond?) when he was the front man for the Peyote Cowboys in the late 1980's. It was an interesting show. He sang and wildly strummed a Rickenbacker 620/12 FG through a bunch of effects (echoplex, chorus, flanger, etc) boxes to create a swirling psychedelic sound. Dallas had an interesting music scene back in those days...

Robert Z - The Old 97's just released a double live CD. I picked up a copy at one of the independent record shops in Denver, but I don't think it's an "indie-only" release.

They're a great band live and I've gotten a real kick out of listening to it.

Harley: It's 'Randy Z', though some people mix me up with my cousin 'Robert Z'. The Old 97's are from Dallas and started their musical careers here playing in a variety of bands. The singer/rhythm guitar was a solo acoustic folkie as a teenager and had at least one band (Scarlet's Garden?). He no longer lives here, having gotten married and gone 'Hollywood'. I must admit that while I enjoy live music, the crowds and the clubs keep me away from most live shows. I've heard great things about them but haven't bothered to check 'em out.
