Post by ojobob2 »

just a quick one, anyone know what gauge the factory strings would have been on a 91' 4003?

Current gauge is 45-55-75-105, Owen.
Probably the same back then in '91.

Hm... The E is a bit on the heavy side. It's a matter of personal taste, no argument there. I never use an E that's heavier than 95 on any of my bass guitars, including the Ricks.
A Rickenbacker bass is much like the Jaguar E car - perennially ultra-fashionable.

According to my records, strings available from Rickenbacker at the time for a four string bass were:

.045-.055-.075-.105 rw nikl (standard)
.040-.058-.080-.102 rw ss
.044-.063-.080-.102 rw ss
.040-.054-.076-.096 compressed rw nkl
.044-.058-.080-.102 compressed rw nkl
.044-.056-.077-.098 round ground nkl
.046-.062-.077-.098 round ground nkl

Owen:
Not at all - no floppiness, no buzzing either. It's just that I hate feeling an E string that's too heavy and hearing an E string that's noticeably louder than the other three. As you probably have guessed by now, 5 and 6-string basses really aren't my bag. Similarly, I dislike a very light G string on my bass guitars.

For what its worth I swear by D'Addario EXL 170's, .45 .65 .80 .100 these are nickle roundwounds and are very bright and long lasting. Never had a bad string in 12 years.
