Post by andrew »

And how do you use it? Two amps? double input on one?

I own 7 Ric basses and none of them are wired for stereo ... 6 are mono and one has 2 mono outputs ... my first Ric was mono as well ...

How would you do a double input on one amp? Wouldn't that just be the equivalent of going mono?

I had thought about running the treble pickup through some effects, feed this and the clean neck output into a mini mixer and then one single input into my amp.

I sometimes have found using effects take out some of the bottom end but this way I could keep the foundation and adjust the treble pickup sound.

double mono into one amp ... hmmm ... I never would have considered that ... the double mono usually happens because the existing ros plugs malfunction ... this is quite common ... several of my 4001/4003 basses had the ros malfunction and I usually rewire it with 2 mono outputs ... then you can plug in either output and get a mono signal or you can run a mono signal to 2 different amps or if one jack fails then you have one that works ... my main Ric bass for 30 years was a mono 1968 4001 so I got used to not having ros at all ... if I had it in the 70s and 80s I might have tried it but now I use one bass amp with one input ...

I've tried running the neck pickup into my SVT/810 and the bridge pickup into my Hiwatt 200 and buddies orange 4x12 with weber speakers.

Spent about 20 minutes fiddling around with it, but in the end using only my SVT just sounded better...

These days I never use the neck pickup anyway - too much mud.

Yes, that's what I meant. The guitar player in my band runs two lines into both channels of his Hiwatt and leaves one completely clean and put his distortion on the other line. It sounds far better than just running a single line into the amp. Huge distortion sound but with really cutting clarity on each note that doesn't take from the effect of the distorted sound at all.
I was curious to know if anyone did anything similar with their bass but it seems like the ric-o-sound isn't that popular with bassists.

I used to run stereo into a double channel SVT head before I owned a ric-o-sound kit. Sounded good but I realized I could get virtually the same sound running mono. I've tried it with two SVT's a few times but to me it sounds more solid mono into the same two amps. I just mix it with the controls on the bass. I think that if I did run stereo into an SVT (but mono out like before) and took my time adjusting the controls I could probably get a better sound than just plain mono or maybe even a better sound with two SVT's and stereo but that is a little too complicated for me now. Besides the fact that I don't feel like moving two of them and it would be overkill in most of the places I play. I think it would be good for effects though even into a two channel amp like an SVT, I don't use them.

For some time a ran a mono signal into a rackmout crossover then into a clean-ish preamp for my lows into 2-1x15" cabinets and a "dirty" preamp for the highs which fed a 2x10. I maintained a nice solid clean lowend tone with an overdriven topend. It was a great tone but a bit of a PITA keeping things balanced and, in the end, turned out to be more trouble than I was willing to deal with.

Now I just run one signal throughout with higher quality effects and my overall tone is just as good with less hassle/tweaking.

I hardly use the neck pickup except to color the bridge and thats on my 4001 and 4003.

Both Tones full open
Bridge full on
Neck at 8 o'clock, or just to where it comes into play (could be 9 oclock)
I play mainly thru an SVT 350H solid state and a 410HLF cab and I cab get extra bass thru the head.

Yeah I get more of my sound from the bridge also. When I ran stereo into the SVT head I ran the bridge into the main channel and used 95% bridge pickup, I didn't realize this for a while, it was like playing a 4000, sounded great.

I was playing in a friend's studio today and my dual mono output came in handy I ran one signal into a bass pod and then into an amp and I ran the other signal into another bass pod which went direct into the computer ... a direct box with 2 outputs will do the same ...

I'm running my 4001S (mono) through a Sansamp pedal, taking the dry "parallel out" feed to one amp and the wet signal to another. Seems to work OK.

BTW, RicsRus in the UK tell me Ric-o-sound is discontinued - is that right? Coz I rather fancy trying it anyway on my stereo-enabled kit. If anyone's got an old box they want to sell/trade, I'm at [email protected].
enough, already.

They're temporarily unavailable from RIC, but JH said that there should be plenty of stock left to last for a while.

Mine should be arriving any day now Image

Some poor chap paid around $100 on ebay recently for a used one without the extra mono cable.
Plus five minus five!
