She hit 10,000 rpm, talk about SCREAM!
Hehe...my first car, a 1980 Plymouth Reliant Wagon, blew the butterfly valve in it's carb when I was driving once. It was a wild ride, with limitied ability to brake on a winding narrow state parkway in NY.
I had to throw the thing into neutral to get any serious braking, and when I did so it revved at maybe 10K or more. Not a very healthy sound for a 2.2 liter 4-banger.
When I got home, I got to the top of the driveway, slammed it in neutral to stop. My dad came out of the garage and said "son, that doesn't sound too good".
No it didn't. But before I got the narrow and winding part of the Taconic Parkway it was fun blasting over those hills at 80 mph, where normally the car struggled.

I would think anything over 6K would certainly shrapnel it. My '67 390 Cougar GT motor was built for racing and could only turn 8.5K. I realize it is limited more by it size/rotating mass but I think it still may have been a little more stout than an '80 Reliant.
When an engine is revving to near explosion it sounds like it is doing 50K.....ask me how I know!

The DZ302 5.0L that was in my uncle's (former) 1968 Camaro Z28, with the 10.5:1 pistons and the 2.02 fuelie heads, the 780 Holley 4 BBL etc had a red line or 8500 and the previous owner said it would hold 7800 for a few minutes with no valve float. It would reqularly do about 110 mph down the Everrett Turnpike in Nashua NH during the early 70's. This with a 4.10 rearend. That, my friends, is a man's MOTOR. Despite the big cam (308 duration?) you could place a glass of water on the air cleaner and at idle the glass would stay there- but the back end of the car would be burping furiously and the exhaust system "pinged" like the high compression sound of a big cammed small block.
Oh yeah, I forgot- is this a bass forum?
