I don't get upset or take it personally when someone's opinion differs from mine. There are matters much more important that I don't waste my time worrying about. Image

I just started the thread to see what other's opinions were as to where they draw the line on acceptability vs. ruin. Or why they think other Forumites, in general, judge as they do. I certainly don't think anyone needs to defend how they treat their property. I am repulsed by some of the things I see being done to Rics around here but tend to keep it to myself and try to offer a positive opinion on part of the project since it is the owner's vision and it isn't my place to make him/her feel bad about it.

I only post pics of my Rics and Ric projects because I am excited about them. I don't do it to get congratulations and positive reinforcement. I just have to tell somebody and my wife can only take so much. Image If I get negative responses (which I certainly have) or get criticism that is cool too. Like anything else it depends on how criticism is presented. The wide range of opinions is one of the great things about this forum.

I would try to keep the positive atmosphere in this forum. If I see something I really like, I'll cheer, if I don't like it or I'am indifferent, I'll say nothing...

I think it's great, Brian. That is a totally acceptable mod, IMHO...because you're "replicating" a VERY cool bass that Ric DID produce...the Blackstar

An excellent canvas you've chosen for the mod....
I wonder what my BBR will look like with the BBR fretboard?....Hey Paul!!! Image

I'm a traditionalist in the truest sense of the word. That being said, I am not a fan of the Blackstar bass, but I really like your 4004, Brian. For me, I think it has something to do with the fact that it's a more "modern" bass, and so it doesn't seem like tradition is being meddled with. Or something.

Yeah, I usually don't go for all-one-color basses, or blacked out basses, but it really does look awesome.

A good mod works on whatever bass you're doing it to, a bad mod is a hatchet job.

While am I am hesitant to change any of my Ricks, it's not because I don't see the point. I'm just happy with they mine play. And the Fenders I have modded is not a function of them being Fenders, per se...it's really that the PU's on those guitars sucked. The '66 Mustang PU's were just old and weak, and the 92 MIJ-J just had ****** PU's to start.

Brian, interesting thread. I fall in fact on both sides of the fence. I am a traditionalist and customizer. I cringe when I see a mod done on a Ric, but I also want to mod some of my basses. The biggest reason I didn't offer to buy your 8 string is because it was re-finished and the TRC was painted. Sure I could have gotten a new TRC and black is still black, but I lost interest with those considerations. I am still looking for an 8, beat up, don't care as long as it's original.
On the other side my MAIN Ric is a WT 1975 with two J pickups and paint splotch stickers I got out of a cereal box in the 80's. It's the ugliest Ric I ever saw (well almost) but it sounds great. It still sounds like a Ric, but deeper. I was considering that MG S on ebay last week. I wanted to “Lemmy” it with 4004 pickups. In the end the price went way to high for a project bass. I'm still on the lookout for a project Ric which I will probably greatly modify.
My basses are “players” they are mine and I don't care that much about resale value because right now I'm playing my basses not thinking about selling them. Anyway I think there is room for the original unmodified Ric and the custom Ric. A custom Ric is usually customized for the person playing it. Unless you find a buyer with your same tastes the resale value my be diminished.
Brian, you Blackened 4004 does look awesome. I'm sure you will get plenty of looks with that one.

I agree Rikk about both sides of the isle. I approach with caution any mods made on a Rick.

That being said, I would have grabbed Brian's 8 if I hadn't been spending money like a drunk sailor lately. To me most 8's appear a little awkward in appearance. Brian's 8 looked "together"
and almost graceful.

I just unloaded a jetglo Laredo that if it had looked like this baby, I'd still own her.
I'm just happy to be here.
