Geddy in Bass Player

Post by levykev »

I thought for sure everyone would be talking about Geddy Lee, on the cover of the most recent Bass Player magazine... discussing his basses over the years. i don't have the issue in front of me, but stating Rickenbackers were "slam-bam" kind of basses which he kept his action high to achieve the sound that he wanted. he also stated he had to keep practicing all of the time to keep his chops up. a good read from a great player.

I think the mag as slowing been going down hill.
Buy it before someone else does.

While I appreciate your geographic isolation, please let me suggest that it would be better for someone to buy you the issue and send it to you. I am a magazine editor, and I must protest the idea of scanning and transmitting copyrighted material. It is the biggest threat to the publishing industry. Some publishers offer electronic magazines and can certainly take orders for current or back issues through their websites. I'm not criticising you, but just trying to prevent a problem before it occurs.

I checked it out online and it is basically the "Freewill" transcription, and that he played it on the Rick with Rotosound rounds and with the chorus effect on it.

That transcription of Freewill was in the January issue, Steve. On-line articles are usually from out-of-circulation mags. The March issue just came today and the article is mostly interviews and photos of Geddy.

Bob,

I agree totally. Like many mags, BP has gotten ad heavy and less articles. Plus the current writers just don't seem to capture my interest anymore.
I let my subscription lapse and never bothered to renew. I don't think I will again.

I know mags depend on ads for income but at least even it out with substance. Just look at TapeOp. They've gotten ad heavy but killer articles.

Here's the link to Bass Player's website:

bass player online

But unfortunately the Geddy article doesn't seem to be up yet. But do a search for "Geddy" and you can find the writeup on "Freewill" (though the sheet music isn't available online, unfortunately...)

i think it comes in the mail a week or two before it hits the stands... keep an eye out.

i have to say as far as Bass Player, i've really gotten into the last handful of issues... their covers have consisted of my fave players: mccartney, peter hook, adam clayton, george porter jr., and jack bruce to name a few.

whereas a few years back, they really turned me off.

Glad I could help Philip! The coding for links and stuff on this site is kind of a pain, but I think I've finally memorized it to a certain degree.

I live in Japan, and although I can buy Bass Player, it's an hour away and expensive, so it's really convenient to be able to read it (or parts of it anyway) online. I know a lot of people are disappointed with the magazine lately, but I don't think it's all that bad. Some of the shorter features at the beginning are a bit skimpy, but overall I enjoy it. I'm gonna have to go back and read that "Freewill" article at the website!
