here's a link showing some of my basses ...

http://www.3dentourage.com/10-basses.htm

Restored Rics and custom built Leo Fender designed basses ... I put 5 strings on a 4 string neck .... Got the idea from the 4003s5 ...

Nice collection Jeff. I couldn't help but notice the Dillion VMB-500/5. I also have one in my collection, I use it all the time. They're great instruments for the money.

In some ways I love the Dillion ... in some ways it sucks ... It gets a great clean tone for thumb slapping stuff, it has a wonderful neck and a tighter string spacing ... 2 1/2" at the bridge ... which in my mind is perfect ... a lot of 5 strings have 3" spacing at the bridge and around 2" at the nut ... you need lumberjack hands to play that kind of bass ..

What I didn't like about the dillion was the resonant quality of the wood ... it is harsh and not warm ... also the way the pickup was wired ... one volume and two tone controls ...

It was muddy ... one tone control seemed to do nothing .. so I rewired it to vol, vol, tone ... that way I can split the coils and get a single coil sound ...

Anyway I had a toaster in the neck position for a while and that gave it a nice sound ... I think I will put a jazz bass pickup in the neck/mid position and I think I will replace the body with a solid swamp ash body finished in clear ...

Wood is very important to a bass guitar sound ... and I am not happy with the sound of the Dillion because of the wood ...

Actually 2 of those basses in that picture are sold the '73 mapleglo ric, because I don't play 4 strings any more and the burgundy jazz bass because the neck was too wide.

I installed a push-pull pot in to my VMB-500/5 in the boost knob position (the knob closest to the strap pin). It's wired series in the down position and parallel in the up position. It makes a big difference in the sound of the bass.
I find that I rarely play my 4001 anymore. That's because i've become so use to playing a 5 string over the past few years I almost feel lost when I pickup a 4 string bass.
I bought a new 4003S/5 a couple of years ago. It immediately developed a number of finish problems, so I returned it to the store where I bought it. In a way i'm glad that it did cause I just couldn't get into the exceptionally tight string spacing on that bass.

When I first picked up a 4003s5 I hated it ... but you get used to it ... if you play with a pick that tight spacing is great ... I can now play it with my fingers very nicely ... I feel completely comfortable with the 4003s5 now ... I converted a 4 string jazz bass to five strings .... 1 1/2" nut and 2 1/2" bridge ... this is a real slick, smooth, fast playing bass ... I have done the same with p-basses ...

The dillion is the fattest neck bass I own and it is more slender than most five string basses ... the neck has the same heel and a little wider nut than a 4 string neck ...

My blue 4003s5 bass is the one in my whole collection .... now when I play a 4001 or 4003 or anybodies 4 string bass the strings are soooo far apart it seems cumbersome ...

Jeff, what year is that white S5? I didn't know Ric made a bound five string (of course, I hadn't been looking until the last year or so).

I don't mind the string spacing, it is tight, but that doesn't bother me. I never liked the Jazz 5 strings, the necks are too huge. A wide neck is okay as long as the depth is slim, but wide neck with deep profile is uncomfortable to me, which is why I'm a bit apprehensive about the CII/5.

Jeff,
That 4001 Fireglo of yours has very nice (almost flamey) maple grains!
Did you select her from a bunch of other 4001 basses with normally less figured body wood in a store? In what year was she made?

That '68 fireglo is a wonderful instrument ...

here's some more pics ...

http://www.3dentourage.com/68-ric.htm

I bought that bass used in 1973 from a guy who had abused it ... it had exposed wood on the back ... he also put it in a case that didn't fit properly and bent the neck so it had really high action ... then he mutilated the nut ... The black tape wound strings were so old that they were rusting under that tape coating ...

I got it for $150 without a case ... I bought a Fender case and had the truss rods adjusted and put a brand new set of round wound strings on it ... and it has been great ever since ...

It has gone through a few changes ... in the 80's I had Stars Guitars put a brass nut on it and sheild the electronics ... then recently I put a Ric plastic nut in and Ric high gain pickups ... yes I have the original pickups and capaciter in a box so I can restore to original ...

Anyway the wood is beautiful and the tone is great ...
