Using effects in a loop between pre and poweramp?

Hey,

My Traynor YBA200 head has a 1/4 preamp out line and a 1/4 amp in line. I have heard that it can be advantageous to run your effects through such a loop as opposed to having them between the bass and the preamp (As I have them now).

What do you guys think? I use a boss OD-3 and soon I will have a fulltone bassdriver. I heard the rackmount effects were best used in such a loop, but pedal effects were not ment to handle such a high signal input.

I am not sure, but, I think an FX loop is different than preamp out, poweramp in, in that the latter doesn't really interupt the signal chain, as an FX loop would. It would only be an preamp out, and also a power amp in. If you installed an FX unit there you would still get the normal clean feed as well, the normal signal path as it were, it also may introduce a nasty ground loop. I would suggest asking a Traynor tech that question.

I took a look at the manual (go figure) and it said that this loop is ment to work as an effects loop (in addition to allowing you to use the amp as a preamp, or a slaved poweramp) but that most stompboxes may not have sufficient headroom to handle the signal... so they suggest rackmounted effects.

I bet the fulltone on 18V would work nicely but I doubt I would bother with the extra hassle.

Pre/Power loops work the same as a series effects loop. The normal path will be disconnected when you insert an effect.

You just have to make sure that you are not overdriving the effect units. The pre or gain knob should give you control over the send level.
