StingRay 5 for a v63 or c64...

I agree that they're not the most suited to overdrive, but then that applies to all active basses in my opinion.
What I love about the StingRay is that like Rics they have their own sound. There are plenty of permutations possible with that sound. I think basses that try to be a bit of jazz and a bit MM or whatever just end up a compromise.
Another thing they have in common with Rics is that they have pretty much set the standard for quality in a mass-produced bass.

well no doubt, but the Stingray is a great bass! It was my first love. I still have some old recording of mt last Stingray5. I haven't had such an clean and even tone on my Rickenbacker.

"out of all my local guitar shops here in Dublin city only one carries a Ric. Its a badly maintained 4003 with a price tag of $2600"
That's what eBay is for. 10 years ago we had a RIC authorized dealer here in Tel Aviv, but not any more. There is good choice of new and used Fenders, Gibsons, Ibanez, Yamaha, Tobias, etc., but for Rics I go to eBay. $2,600 for a beater 4003 is sick.
"Where the 'grrrr' emoticon..."
LOL... you should read what Roger Glover went through to get his 4001:

"A Noble Instrument Must Be Nobly Regarded"
I just got rid of my Stingray 5. I know everyone loves these basses - But it never felt right to me in my hands. Can't explain it - all my other instruments have a real personality to them. The MusicMan didn't seem to have one. I was happy to see it go. The money from that went towards a Pedulla MVP5. Awesome bass. I'm very happy...
Pedulla, yet another American guitar brand I've yet to experience. I must get around to planning my bass guitar shop tour of the US...
Regarding my quest for the 4001v63 or 4001c64, since I've noticed how much they're going for on Ebay I'm not so sure I want one. Ridiculous prices for replica instruments in my opinion.
