As one who can make fun of himself...I give you my stupid oversight...
I've had a Rick 4003 Bass for 19 months and just LAST NIGHT I found out that there was a damper pad! Not that I'll probably use it, but.....
What I may lack in common sense, I make up in sarcasm.

Kent it's the mechanical mute built into the tailpiece of a Ric bass. The mechanism creates a damper effect by pushing a pad up and on to the strings.

Hence "damper pad".
