Re: "Who's wearing these furs, anyway?"

No one that I know. Perhaps it's the rich and famous?

It is, indeed, Brian...even people who started out poor and anonymous seem to adopt this kind of stupid approach as soon as they 'get theirs'. All these years after we moved out of caves, and we're still fascinated with shiny rocks and dead animal skins. On top of this is the ridiculous irony of the descendants of African slaves adorning themselves with, of all things, CHAINS! Jeepers, brothers, that seems kind of creepy...yeah, they're very expensive gold chains, but still...

Jerry, I'm with you on the subject of human population. If, every year, there are fewer whales, polar bears, mahogany trees, etc., and at the same time, more humans, doesn't it seem like we're involved in a long-term process of converting the entire biosphere into human flesh?

Just to be clear, every human life is sacred to me...I'm just a bit worried about the inevitable effects of inflation...

Well, Sheena, I'm sure you know that I'm anything but 'anti-parent' or 'anti-child'. It's just alarming that in these days of improved health care, birth control and education, there are still places like India and Utah where lots of people think having twelve kids is still okay. It's not...

It's too bad people can't simply 'download updates' for their religions...

Dane, sure i didn't mean that!
Personally, i don't think having 12 kids is not okay - given their parents can assure the kids won't be hungry, without clothes, will have possibility to get an education, etc. Not necessarily they should live in luxury, of course, but there should be enough possibilities for a child to develop his/her skills...
On the other hand, i really cannot understand it when people don't want to have children. But it's only my point of view.

Having twelve was okay, and even made a lot of sense, back when there was a pretty good chance that ten of them wouldn't survive into adulthood. Things are different, now, and crowded...

As far as parenting goes...just like every other arena of human endeavor, there are those born to perform and those who find their place in the audience. As far as your performance goes, I'm right there in the front row, applauding wildly...

I love animals and I hunt. It has been and will continue to be a tradition in my family. I oppose animal cruelty too. I could not club a baby seal, unless my family depended on it for survival. Every year I spend countless hours raising and planting trees for habitat improvement. Not just for the animals I hunt, but for all the animals that inhabit the areas. My family eats all that I kill. If we didn't, I wouldn't kill the animal.
Be careful what you consider as a "fair" weapon for hunting. From the first time someone attached a sharp rock to a stick to modern bullets, weapons have evolved throughout the history of mankind for good reason. An animal would suffer a lot longer if we had to use our hands or a club as opposed to a bullet. With a bullet, it is all over in seconds as opposed to minutes or hours. Also, try not to base your view of hunting on those stupid TV hunting shows with Bubba tromping around, or on the propaganda put out by animal rights extremists.
I love listening to and playing music, but hunting is in my bones. It's as much a part of me as the nose on my face.
Here are two of my basses on a hide from an elk I hunted in Colorado a few years ago. The best meat I've ever had!

I agree with you Kevin...because I know that we're hunters and omnivores by nature. These forward-looking eyes and pointed 'canine' teeth we all have are not accidents...to say nothing of our 'throwing arms'. Even the most dedicated vegetarian Buddhist needs to admit that the next time a 'germ' invades their body, a mechanism operating below the level of consciousness will kill that germ...and germs are animals, no more or less than we are.

Having said that, I think it should be pointed out that the modern world presents us with all kinds of moral conundrums and makes it difficult to establish where the 'high ground' is. For example, I don't consider it survival, or even sport, to have the Secret Service out driving around in a 4x4 looking for quail while one sits in the 'hunting lodge' pulling off a whiskey bottle waiting for the prey's location to be radioed in...

For every serious, dedicated and careful hunter like you there's a pickup full of 'Bubbas' out for a day of drinking and shooting each other...and I'm okay with that. It's positively...Darwinian...

Agreed.

If they were only shooting each other then we would all be better off!Image

If you live in civilization, which I'm assuming you do since you're online, why do you NEED to hunt?? I think killing for food when there's a Safeway down the street is for A)Guys who never grew out of their childhood Cowboy fantasy and/or B)Guys who desperately need to 'control'SOMETHING, in their own lives. Sure, blow the head off a deer big man. If the deer is a mother, you're also killing it's babies. That should make you extremely happy! But don't bullshi* about needing to 'feed your family'. You just want to kill. I'm really tired of this discussion, not to mention it being way off topic.

Yep, you're right Steve. You've got it all figured out, don't you?
Do you think the meat down at the old Safeway (whatever that is) just pops into the freezer?
I never said I had to hunt to feed my family. I choose to hunt, and a major product of that is the meat that it provides my family. I would rather have them eat it than the processed, steroid laden, farmed **** that's in the stores. (no offense to farmers meant).
I'm a hunter and a meat eater. Deal with it!

I will agree that this is off topic and doesn't belong here. I'm off my soapbox and won't comment again on this subject here.

What I think is cool is that the love of Rickenbacker guitars can bring people like Steve and Kevin together. It is their one common bond. Otherwise they would always be on opposite sides of the fence. Image

Okay Kevin- I realize there are two types of people- nurturers and killers. I'm a nurturer, you're a killer. YOU deal with it.
