Sorry, just had a another look.
To me, the headstock doesn't look right and something really weird about the bit of the body wher your forearm sits-like its missing??!!

Its real. The body shape does look a little odd. It could just be the camera angle, or it may have been slightly modified.

my 81 4001s had slightly rounded horns too . They werent as pronounced as a regular 4001 with deluxe appointments . Mine was unmolested and came from the factory like that

And it's a set neck rather then the straight through?

Set neck is correct for this model.

The pup surround has square corners. The TRC should have the model # on it if it's a 1982, shouldn't it?
I would ask for a pic of the truss rods. Don't buy it until you see TWO rods!

I don't think it was sanded down. I looks to me that it is just the quality of the photo. The resolution is really bad. Probably taken with a camera phone.
No, I don't play the sax.

It is legit.
I still don't get why the neck on 4000 basses enters the body at a different angle (as viewed from the front or rear of the instrument, that is) than on 4001/4003 basses. Anyone?
A Rickenbacker bass is much like the Jaguar E car - perennially ultra-fashionable.

It's been sanded on the left side...

Blatantly, blatantly obvious!

Poor bass, essentially ruined.
