Seems a bit strange to me, Peter. Not willin' to cause waves (oh well... the third time i say that on this thread!), our country (Russia) is officially laic, and a melting pot of nations, cultures and religions, and anybody at his/her own will can celebrate whatever they want to celebrate. At the moment.

We have a built in "self destruct" button here. during our conflicts with other nations (none in particular referred to) all that our media does is "stick up" for the "enemy" reporting on bad things that we have done (dubious as to whether they have their facts right) literally years previously. All this does is give ammunition to those against us abroad as well as here in our our country (often those who have come here as refugees, whom we have welcomed and fed, clothed, housed and even given cars to - bear in mind that we don't even offer this hospitality to our own people who are having a bad time) this directly results in our troops being killed while doing their job and attacks here on our own mainland. We are so frightened of upsetting anyone that we analyse everyone else's views except our own.

The voice of England - "Should we defend ourselves, err, better not just in case we offend the attackers".

Sorry for having a rant but that is the way it is here.

I seem to remember a few months ago, conservative Christian groups actually picketed a major retail chain because they posted "Happy Holidays" theme signs, in an effort to be more inclusive of all faiths. The chain caved and changed the signs to read "Merry Christmas". Maybe white, but not left-leaning.

IMO, any democracy that does not allow freedom of choice among its citizens about how to live their lives (as long as no one is injured or exploited), is on a downward slide, if not spiral.

All recent legislation that cramps our freedoms has been pushed through this monolithically conservative-dominated House, Senate, and now Supreme Court, by men who are white, religious, and right-leaning (if not ready to actually fall of the edge of their own Flat Earth).

All the while that more and more restrictions are being placed upon what we do and say, our environmental policies are being rewritten, as is our tax code, to benefit the big corporations.

Back to political correctness: like the so-called Moral Majority, it is neither. It's a stupid attempt by one white, left-leaning sector of our populace to undo centuries of guilt over bad judgment with one stroke of the (pen?). It shows how far individual responsibility has sunk as individual choice has withered.

Some semanticist/hair splitter has decided to start his own religion centering around inoffensiveness. Like all religions, it replaces individual choice. inquisitive thought and exercise of critical faculty, with rules and terminology. What happened to everyday respect and disrespect, and the value and practice of self-censorship in conversation?

This does not bode well.

But anyway, a well-executed UJ paint job is a delight to behold...

Too true, Paul... reminds me of Shrove Sunday tradition - it's a very good tradition, a day to think about those we have hurt (and we hurt others too often, unintentionally sometimes, but IMHO, no intention doesn't mean the one who was hurt feels less pain...), to bring our apologies again... Some people, however, use this tradition in the other way: all the year, they do whatever they want to do, and this day, they just say: "Forgive me everything, everybody", presuming everybody who were hurt should forgive them because that's the day...
And yes, stars and stripes look very nice.

I remember when "Plastic Man" by the Kinks was banned by the BBC because it said "bum" (...plastic legs that reached up to his plastic bum...)in it, but they played the version of The Who's "My Generation" with the "f" word in it.

And Ray Davies had to fly back from the USA to London to rerecord the lead vocal on 'Lola' in order to get the song played on the BBC. He had to substitute 'cherry cola' for 'Coca Cola'. But they played all the Beatle songs with inappropriate language (i.e. 'Day Tripper', 'Girl', and 'Baby You're A Rich Man'). Lennon was good at hiding naughty words and racial epithets.
