I'm getting a visual image of how good this guitar is going to look on completion. I bet the the regrets of it selling it are really starting to kick in now John.

I know from past mail Paul that you've been chasing a Capri, is this going to be one for the collection? (No Howard I'm not getting the urge - no more guitars for me)

You know, if I was a curmudgeon I'd point out that "unique" is not supposed to be qualified.

There are a couple of meanings to "unique" in current use, and one happens to be "of a type or kind", not necessarily "one of a kind".

It was that sense that my sentence had, if it wasn't clear.

Are all hollow body Rickenbackers normally constructed from maple plywood with a veneer top?

Whoa, Brian. I'm not sure you meant what you said there...

Hollowbody Rickenbackers are machined (CNC routed) from thick billets of maple, with the cuts being taken from the back (most of the hollowing) and the front (the "beavertail", control cavity opening, partial neck joint, and pickup routs. The exception is the 381, which has additional machining operations to both front and back to bind and out in the so-called "German carve".

Then the billet is closed off from the back with a flat piece of wood. These early Capris had plywood backs, but most use maple pieces. The plywood on the early Capris was a 1/4" lumber-core maple face plywood. This is obtainable today, but the grain is very boring. I wanted something special for this Capri, so it is getting new veneer, front and back. This is a custom-builder's touch that is strictly speaking, historically incorrect, as are a couple of other things I have planned.

But I'm going for appearance or effect, if you will, not a strict restoration. Capris are beautiful guitars, don't misunderstand me, but I want mine to have a little bit more.

I thought I read somewhere that they were CNC routed from solid maple, with a maple back.

Many people thought Padauk and plywood backs on Capris were a myth!
