B&W Abbey Road Footage - 1964

Post by kog »

Apologies if this has been posted before, but this is the first time I've seen it. Decent B&W footage of them in the studio, film is dated Feb. 27, 1964. Background music is "Misery", but according to Lewisohn, that day they were recording "And I Love Her", "Tell Me Why" and "If I Fell".

There's a shot of them around the piano, and George is holding his Ramirez classical guitar. Other views of Paul & Hofner, John with the J-160 (no sign of his 325) and George tuning his 360-12.

Looks like it was fun to be a Beatle in 1964. And everybody smoked.

Alun Owen is in there, too, taking notes for the AHDN script, no doubt.

Who's the engineer?
Listen to that sustain!

The engineer is Norman Smith. He was their engineer up thru Rubber Soul, after which he was replaced by Geoff Emerick.

Smith went on to engineer Pink Floyd and other artists, and he actually recorded some songs himself in the early 70s under the name Hurricane Smith. His best known "hit" was from 1973 called "Babe, What Would You Say." I was a disk jockey at the time, and I remember that song vividly.

Does anyone else realize that the "pat-a-cake" punching game being played by Paul & Ringo in this video is taken straight from the Crosby/Hope "Road" movies? Or am I just old??

No, I'm quite sure that was aforementioned Alun Owen. Yes, I remember the Hope and Crosby 'pat-a-cake' routine from their road films.

Howdy,

Loved it! George can be seen playing with his new "toy" in one segment!
