Nicely ambered FG Laredo on the Bay

We just have to be careful I guess.

And I thought my '75 4001 was an issue!

Man, I have some Fender 9050 ML (aka bridge cables) that were for a short time on the 4001, but wanked it's neck too much. The strings are in good shape, but I don't think there's enough length on the G to use on my J bass...

With the added heft of the Laredo's neck, I'm sure the neck will bow less than the 4001, but it will bow some. I guess I could just deal with it...or accept that the set of strings is a loss (keep the 3 that *could* be spares on the J as spares...)

So I guess the Laredo sounds good with bulk RW's, that is what it keeps. If I go flats I'll spend the $ and get TI's...not taking a chance with that neck. Rare though they are, I don't want to tempt a broken truss rod!

It's not a MUST have for me, I'm a little concerned about the size of the neck.

I'd really prefer a 4004CI but this is a sweet looking bass and if it doesn't go too high, I'll take another jab at it.

Actually, I hate to say it but my 4004Ci is easily my best player. It is currently strung BEAD, has incredibly low action and plays with little effort. It isn't going anywhere, sorry.

I'm only going after the FireGlo if the price stays low enough to justify over a new one. I would like another maple fretboard 4004 but not enough to pay new-ish prices for it.

4004Ci's pop up on a pretty regular basis so you should be able to score one without too much trouble. I'm looking for a second one myself....

BTW....nothing rude about bidding on it! I'm not dead set on getting it either. I'm just in it if I can get it for a good deal which isn't likely.

When the time is right, I'm sure one will pop up.

My V63 is like that. It's amazing how different each one of these basses can be. I have a VERY LIGHT touch, and it can be played by a butterfly! By FAR, it has the lowest action than any of my basses!

How do you find the maple necks? I've heard they can have DEAD SPOTS, do you find that true? I don't know if it is rumor or what, but it actually caused me to balk at the idea of owning one.

Dead spots?!?! BLAH!

It may just be my defining of "dead spots" but I have never experienced any on the Rics I've had/played. Are there positions where notes don't ring quite as strong as in others? Sure.....but there are on every bass I have ever played. Period. I have never had an issue in my playing where notes sound "dead" compared to others and I'm all over the neck.

I certainly don't have any issue with it on my Ci. It sings!

No, I've never had a problem with any of my Rics either. I just remember reading it somewhere and thought, hmmm, store that for future reference...

I did have a problem YEARS ago on a Yamaha, the 9th fret on the D string was just a DEAD THUMP. I had a luthier check it out, and no matter what he did, it couldn't be cured. But my RICS and my Alembics, they both ring like bells!

I'm amazed at how well these RIC's do ring out. It sounded kind of funky, but until now, I haven't had a chance to ask about that.
