The Rick Sound Never Goes Away!!!

I've said it before but tone is in the player. I don't think Geddy has been trying to get his other basses to sound like Ricks. It is just the way he sounds. The bassists from both Styx and Foreigner used Ricks. Unless you saw pics it would be hard to tell. Geddy's tone derives from his chops. We identify it as a "Rick" sound because that was the brand of bass he played when Rush made it big. Sure, the bass shaped his tone but Geddy would sound like Geddy on any bass. A player's tone and sound come first from plucking/picking technique then musical instinct and phrasing plays a huge part. The setup of the instrument should not be ignored. The instrument itself, amplification, effects, and recording technique are certainly important but lower on the list.
I understand what you're saying Ted, but, Geddy's 'trademark' sound IS a Rickenbacker. When he played Wal, Steinberger or Jazz the tone is nowhere near the same. Rick=Clank, growl, ecstacy!!!
People reckon his Jazz sound is like his Rick tone.
IMO they are wrong or they need their ears testing.
The first time I heard Rush was Exit... Stage Left. I loved the sound, but didn't know what type of bass it was. I just knew I had to get one!
I've said it before and I'll say it agin, THIS FORUM IS SUPERB!!!
