I'm sure the new ampegs are great, but I love the tone control the old rocker switches give you... bass boost, high boost, 3 way mid rocker (something like 300hz, 800hz, 3K) to cut or boost depending on how you had the mid knob.
The multi-band EQ's are great, as are the semi-parimetric types... but the rocker switches cover everything you need. Perfect blend of simplicity and control.
I find the 5 setting tone knob on the new ampegs rather useless.
Give me control of my highs and lows... and then let me target my upper mids for boost and I am a happy man.

100 watts is not a lot of power especially if you play rock, they sound good but don't have a lot of head room, the old ones are louder and sound better supposedly, but if you are going to go tube a 70's SVT head is a far better head and actually are not that much more expensive lately. I've owned all sorts of Ampegs over the years and the SVT's are by far the best sounding and loudest I've owned and/or tried out. When I say SVT I mean the real ones made in the 70's, they all have some sort of prefix after them now and are not SVT's. An SVT is a 70's head and one or two 8 x 10 cabs. SVT's can do the B-15 sound with a B-15 cab.
The original speaker cab for a V4-B was a dual 15" long throw folded horn (or something like that) monster, the same size as an SVT cab but twice as deep and was even heavier. I also like the tone controls and switches on the old heads better. Most people do not use SVT heads only because they weigh a ton, but then again V4-B's are no light weights either.
If you are serious about getting a great tone and good volume in most rooms get both a 70's SVT head and cab. I've been lugging them for 30 years now, although I do use 2 B-15 cabs with an SVT head a lot lately instead of the beasts.
I think Ampeg owned Crate, not the other way around

Speaking of St.Louis Music . They have owned Ampeg for at least ten years that i can think of . I wonder why they havent offered a truly correct early SVT reissue ? I must admit i havent really played much of there newer stuff ( old habits die hard )But i do own a little crate bt 25 amp that is an absolutely outstanding combo .The single ten ported setup really barks . It also has a built in tuner on the top thats great for practicing cover tunes .
im getting to old for this ****

Well there you have it my mistake. I have an SVT-CL and an SVT2 and they are both awesome amps. I like all of the features and overdrive on the SVT2. Can't go wrong with an SVT. Yeah they weigh a ton but the tone is worth it. I got both of them for around $800 a piece on ebay. Even though I love them I can't imagine going into guitar center and plunking down 1500 for a brand new one. That VR one will prolly be like $1800. The one other sucky thing besides the weight is the $300 for a complete retube.
