I seriously doubt it; either a private purchase of a case from a 4001 copy....

It's in Europe, so I wasn't sure whether there were some different case manufacturers used for exports in the '70s. The guy calls it an OHSC.

Brad, now that you mention that in the story, I have seen another Rickenbacker bass for sale in Britain (an early '70's 4001 if I remember correctly) that had a case just like the one above. Maybe others have seen this too.....

A couple of Japanese 4001 copies I've seen had form-fit cases just like that one.
A Rickenbacker bass is much like the Jaguar E car - perennially ultra-fashionable.

Brad, we've never, ever used a case like that. Many years ago the case was an optional accessory, and in fact there was a choice of two kinds of cases. Anyway, some wholesale customers ordered instrument without cases and provided cases from other suppliers.

We stopped this practice and began providing a case free of charge to be absolutely sure that each instrument is delivered with a case that will suitably protect it.

Thanks, guys. (Especially Mr. Hall.) I figured it was aftermarket but wasn't absolutely sure since I'd never seen a new export.
