Bridge Pick-Up for 4003s/5

Post by petew4001 »

The treble pup on my 4003s5 was diagnosed as "dead" this afternoon by my luthier, he suggested I send it out and have it re-wound.

Since RIC no longer makes these pups, would you guys suggest having it re-wound, or buying a new pup with 4 poles.

Any suggestions would be appreciated

F Y I , it is a year 2000 which means the pup is only 5 years old.

Jeff Rath can mod a pickup for you from a new 4-pole, or re-wind this one, Sergio might be able to help you there!

Pete, that is a rare pick up. If it were me, I'd spare no cost in getting the original one re-wound.

However, Jeff is more than capable to modify a 4 pole pick up.

I can turn a 1990 or later 4 pole 4003 high gain into a 5 pole high gain pickup ... it will sound a little different than a 4003s5 treble pickup ... the 4003 pickup is wound to about 11k ohms and the 4003s5 pickup is wound to 15k ohms ...

so what are you options?

1- have the pickup rewound by Seymour Duncan or some other shop.
2- put in a different pickup ... bartolini and SD both make Ric replacement pickups ... pretty much any jazz pickup will also work ...
3- put in a hb1 pickup
4- get a sergio pickup
5- or have me modify a Ric high gain 4 pole into a 5 pole pickup

Your best option is have me rewind - for free - the original 5-pole pickup. Interested?

After much thought, I decided to have my 4003s/5 checked out by another luthier. Incredibly the second luthier found a bad connection to the pick-up switch. A very easy fix, no charge, (but I did turn him on to a bottle of Gray Goose) and the bass is up and running again.

A special thanks to all at the RIC Forum, especially Sergio for offering to help me out.

Thanks again,
Pete
