I agree that remixing gets into dicey territory. But remastering the original master tapes (ala the Capitol Albums releases) clearly results in better sounding CDs without altering any of the original mixes. Listen to the new Rubber Soul CD on the new Capitol set.

However, for my own enjoyment, I have used my home digital studio to play with some of the stereo releases, especially those with the voices on one side and instruments on the other. By panning L and R a bit toward the center the sound gets amazingly full and has a power that was compromised by the hasty stereo mixing — which was really only done to facilitate better mono mixes. The drums, bass — and vocals — sound so much fuller when brought more to center. That's probably why George Martin always preferred the mono mixes....

The smartest engineers "back then" used to do mono final mixes and listen to them through small speakers, not huge studio monitors. I did quite a bit of recording in the late '60s in a local studio and theengineer had a car radio speaker hooked up for playback. If it sounded good on that speaker, it sounded good on anything.

According to Reuters, Neil Aspinall (managing director of Apple) says the entire Beatles catalog will soon be available for download. He was quoted as saying that they are completing the digital remaster process at this time. They didn't think it was fair to sell downloads of the existing masters when new remasters were just around the corner. I suppose this means we'll soon be seeing all the British albums reissued. That's good news!
