What about Ted Turner of Wishbone Ash? Also a Rick player.

1.Pete Farndon-The Pretenders
2.Graham Maby-Joe Jackson
3.John Wetton-

I also liked them a lot, Pete Farndon had a great sound, played great lines and played an all black Ric 4001 along with a P bass.

Graham Maby was also a great versatile bassist who made a flatwound Ibinez J bass copy sound almost like a Ric.

John Wetton is not underrated, he's a known great.

Damn, I'm always the only one to mention Doug Rauch...

He is maybe not underrated but simply too unknown. Played with Santana, Cobham, Lenny White, Loading Zone, The Voices Of East Harlem, Buzzy Linhart etc. Early pioneers of slap bass, or double thumbing actually. Funky liquid sound. Played a Fender Jazz with a EB humbucker at the neck, probably wired stereo. He died in the late seventies.

I'll second that Lonnie. John Deacon, who did play a Ric early on, is way underrated. His stuff from 74-77 is wonderful, and fits in with Queen at their majestic best!

Someone whose name doesn't crop up too often in these types of threads which leads me to think he is underrated is Norman Watt Roy.

He's a great player mostly known for his playing with Ian Dury as a member of The Blockheads, a very hard working and dedicated bass player.

Funny, I was thinking about NWR the other day. He bought groove to the Blockheads 4 sure...

Takes me back to my teen years while laughing out Ian Dury's lyrics. Truly a very underrated bloke in all respects.

Yeah there was a lot of good stuff that was off the beaten path out of the late 70's and early 80's, it was a very adventurous time for music. Radio was great then.
