Capitol Albums Vol 2- Right For Me???

Post by bosifis »

I enjoyed Vol 1, 90% of the songs I've never heard in stereo before. I was a little dissapointed with the "cavernous" reverb added to some of them and the bad mix of one of my fav's; "If I fell"(The slapback on John's intro and the "un-fixed" part where Paul's voice cracks). All in all I really enjoyed the stereo mixes. I could've gone without the mono ones, but I still would've spent the same $ just for the stereo mixes.....To each his own I guess...

Ok, here's my question... Are the stereo mixes from the Capitol "Help!" and "Rubber Soul" albums different from the British version Cd's??? As I stated, I care not for the mono mixes, I don't care about the false start on "I'm Looking Through You" and am not interested in the "Help!" scores. I DO want the stereo "Please Please Me" songs off of "The Early Beatles" AND the remaining "Beatles For Sale" tracks on "Beatles VI". I'm wondering if it'll be worth it to get less than half of what I want out of the set for full price?!?!?! I do enjoy the mini-albums the cd's come in...But.....

Is anyone willing to trade for the songs I need? If so, send me an e-mail- "[email protected]".....Lemme know now before my post is erased for the "contributing to the delinquency of copyright infringement, even though we've all spent 100's of dollars for their music" law.

"Call Mr Plow, that's my name. That name again is Mr Plow"(Simpson fans, rejoice!!!)
Cheers, Brian

P.S. Any "Cape Codders" out there? (Out thaah)I haven't played with another musician for like three years. I need another Beatle freak like me to jam with!!!

Capitol was never give any multitrack tapes from EMI, so they really couldn't remix much of anything. What is different is that Capitol (in 1964) decided to add more reverb to make the sound livelier. They felt that the American audience was more accustomed to a "wetter" sound. They even felt the need to create fake stereo when mono singles were added to the Capitol LPs. And, of course, some stereo tracks (If I Fell, for example) were different from their mono counterparts.

Now that we know that Apple is in the process of remastering the entire catalog for rerelease, we can only hope that the stereo versions of the first four LPs will also be available — since all of the LPs were originally issued in mono and stereo. There are still album tracks as of today that are not available in stereo on CD (Misery, There's a Place, I Should Have Known Better). And many of the stereo tracks from the Capitol Album CDs are alternate takes (If I Fell, I'm Looking Through You). What is nice is to hear the difference that improved mastering can make — listen to the new Rubber Soul. Nothing was added or changed, but it just sounds better! I just hope that Apple gets it right this time so that we can have all the original LPs — sounding as good as possible. It's been long overdue.

Interestingly the majority of the mixing time was spent on the mono versions of their songs. They might spend several days mixing the mono versions and just a few hours on the stereo versions (particularly on the earlier albums). Stereo was still only in the hand of the early adopters then.

If they remix the British versions it could be pretty cool. Geoffery Emerick states in his book that I am the Walrus can never be remixed because the radio sounds you hear on the record were recorded during the mixing process.

So basically back to your question - if you value the improvements in mastering and like the extra reverb on some of the songs go for it. Otherwise, save your money for the remixing / remastering that they are working on for the British versions.

WOW! Very wordy. So since I decided not to read the posts I'll just answer the topic question. Of course it is right for you. As McCartney said in Anthology "it's the bloody Beatles, shut up"!
