Oh, on the sound. Its hard to compare, since I have never heard a 4004CII, or 4004L, and mine never really worked, but it really doesn't sound like a 4003. I would say it is more like a thunderbird. Very thick. Edgey, with increadable sustain. Almost too much sustain. I have made a little foam thingy mute deal I can use when I want the MACCA like sound.

Well, Brian, any pickup where a loose 'loop' of coil wire has been nicked, to use your words, can easily be salvaged, so, don't throw yours away yet.
A Rickenbacker bass is much like the Jaguar E car - perennially ultra-fashionable.

Well, I got my Cii/5 back from the place that made custom pickups for it to address the string coverage issue. Sounds good but I am not sure I like the size of the pickups. Seems a bit too large at first glance. Earlier on this thread, Brian talked about Greg's (Shadoan?) who modded his Trans Green bass with Bartolini's. I assume this meant routing out wood to make them fit, correct?

Even with the custom pickups I now have on my Cii/5, no routing was done so I can eventually replace them with whatever Rick puts out as a solution.

I am just considering what to do with my second Cii/5.

Advice would be welcome.

I want to get a cii5 also ... the cii5 is an elegant well designed bass that simply needs wider pickups ...

I have an idea in my head on how to modify the hb2 pickups ... many jazz bass pickups use long, thin, squarish rod magnets that are about 3/16" x 3/16" by 4" ... simply gluing these on top of a hb2 pickup and making them go to the edge of the pickup would cover a string spacing of 2 3/4" ... of course then something would have to be done to make it look good ... some sort of cover ... also you would have to lower the pickup as well ...

They both look great. Paul, I'm assuming that since you had a second one done, the string spacing is comfortable for you to play fingerstyle. I'm still on the fence about 4-2-5ing my Jetglo Cii.
If you ever get tired of that trans blue...

Joey, the string spacing is no problem at all and I do play fingerstyle.

Would still like to get some comments on the mod needed to put in Bartolini's from Greg.

Joey, by the way, although I really like the trans blue, I would prefer a jetglo. If you mod yours, we can trade...:-)
