HELP INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC- BLECHH!

Post by chingnchime »

I remember as a kid feeling very gypped when i bought the HELP soundtrack because of the corny 'parents' type music between the Beatles cuts. I detested the sitar-laced version of A HARD DAYS NIGHT, etc.
Now i understand it's on the new release of Help, along w/ the mono and stereo mixes (another waste IMO. I know others disagree.)Anybody else dislike the corny instrumentals?

I kinda like them in there. It makes the US release unique.

As a kid I felt the same way.

As for the new release of HELP! either with or without the instrumental tracks I have only one question..... why?

Don't overlook the fact that they are playing the nostalgia angle here. People who remember hearing the American versions of the LPs for the first time want to relive that moment. Sure, they want the stereo mixes, but I'll bet a large number of those who will buy the CDs already have the LPs and either no longer have turntables or simply want to be able to play the songs in their cars in the order they remember hearing them the for first time. For my money, if Apple actually does great remixes of the original LPs in stereo, I'll wait for the downloadable versions.

Exactly David. Whether you like it or not, you can't include it in the set without leaving it as it was originally released. Personally I like the 007 intro to HELP. Here is a link that Mike had posted on another thread that may answer some of the why's you all are asking.

I didn't mind the 007 intro to HELP, but didn't appreciate the rest of the instrumental music. I'm with Kent.

I guess I'll be following the nostalgia angle when I skip over them, like I used to lift the needle w/ the LP!

I ascribe the origin of my interest in classical music to the Help album: I forget where it is in the sequence, but they had the Overture to Act III of Wagner's Lohengrin in there, and I really liked it.

when we say "they had", lets just be clear that "the" isn't "The Beatles". The album named HELP! that the Beatles put out didn't have any of that instrumental stuff on it.

So where did it all come from?... Likely some Capitol exes figured that if they include the instrumentals from the film, they could hold onto some real Beatles songs for later relea$$$$$e. And so, the Beatles contribution to the Capitol LP is simply the first side of the Parlophone LP. The rest is just the weird movie fill-in stuff which is nice to have for a collection, but IMHO has no business in a Beatles re-release Beatle set.

Lets get real here.... when Parlophone put out "A Collection of Beatles Oldies", they didn't include "The Chase" and "In The Tyrol"

Would you say the same for the instrumentals on the HDN LP? Or the stuff on side 2 of the original Yellow Sub LP?

Yes.... I'm glad that they are out there for historical purposes because it was all part of the soundtracks of the movies. But personally I would not include them on any collection of Beatles material for re-release..... they just take up space that could be used for real Beatle stuff.

I think side 2 of Yellow Submarine is probably a lot more pristine on my copy than side 1. Image

I kinda like "Sea of Holes" from Yellow Sub. As far as "taking up space," if the record companies were into offering bang for the buck, they would've put more than the original lineup of each LP each CD when they first came out. "Please Please Me" and "With the Beatles" would've fit on one CD easily. At least now they're giving us stereo and mono takes and using the full capacity of each disc.

I think I see the next box having both the "Butcher" and the trunk cover on the "Y&T" CD. Since then, the "Butcher" photo has been released by EMI, remember the gatefold to "Rarities" and side 2 to the "Paperback Writer" British picture disc single. The shock has worn off, and I think Apple can safely assume to re-issue it in a box set... It's the only logical addition to the next box set. The LPs that are left are, "Beatles' Story," "Revolver," "Y&T," and "Hey Jude." I don't see them sticking a "MMT" or "Sgt Pepper" as those and the rest were identical to the British releases...

Wasn't MMT released as a double EP in England but an LP in the states? I believe there are only six songs on the English versions, but Capitol padded the American version with other tracks.
