Anti - pick snobs

Post by jwr2 »

from time to time I have been running an ad on craigslist.org in the musicians section ... then I put a link to my web site and the section with my profile ...

http://www.3dentourage.com/425/jeffbass.htm

well today some finger playing elitist responded to my ad with this tirade ...

"YOU PRETTY MUCH SUCK. YOU USE A PICK. REAL BASSPLAYERS DONT USE PICKS BRO! I KNOW GUITAR PLAYERS THAT PLAY BETTER BASS THAN YOU! HAHA SADLY ENOUGH YOUR STATEMENT MAY BE TRUE! BUT I BET I HAVE PLAYED WITH GUITAR PLAYERS THAT PLAY BETTER BASS THAN YOU! I AM 23 YEARS OLD AND HAVE BEEN PLAYING BASS FOR 16 YEARS. I CAN TEAR YOUR *** UP WITHOUT EVEN TRYING!"

so I responded and told him to get a life ...

You shouldn't even respond to that sort of ****, Jeff. One of Murphy's Laws is "never argue with a fool, people won't be able to tell the difference"...

Personally, I play without a pick on bass. But some years ago I seriously broke my right middle finger tip. It took a year to get to be able to play with my fingers again.

I was sure glad I knew how to use a pick then. Image

Had a pissing match on CL around X-mas with some idiot saying "cover tunes suck. Anyone playing cover tunes sucks". Hehe...I doubt his band made $2K on NYE, let alone the other $4K we made between Turkey day and then... Image

I play whatever works for the song - pick, fingers or even slap if I could do it better.

Some people have nothing better to do in life.

I AM 39 YEARS OLD AND HAVE BEEN PLAYING BASS FOR 28 YEARS. I CAN IDENTIFY A MORON WHEN I SEE ONE.

BTW Jeff, is that a 4-2-5 on your MP3 of "It's Been Awhile" It sounds distinctly Rick, yet has the low tones of a 5'er. I like it.

There's a similar thread on the RIC forum. Some younger player has been getting grief from the same type of people.
"I CAN TEAR YOUR *** UP WITHOUT EVEN TRYING"
That comment doesn't sound, um, appropriate!
I'd watch out for a "player" who has a bum fetish! Image
Seriously, we know: A: Jeff can play
B: a real player uses whatever he/she feels is appropriate for any given song/situation.
C: that people who post such remarks really need to grow up!
A real musician doesn't put other players down, but learns from different styles & points of view. Make that a real person!
Rock on, Jeff!

DOWN WITH PICKS!!! FINGERS ARE THE ONLY WAY!!!

haha just kidding...I can't believe people could be that stupid. I personally don't use a pick cause I don't like the way it sounds but if it floats your boat then go for it. To each his own.

the "It's been awhile" recording was a simple analog cassette recording from a send off of the pa during a band rehearsal ... I was using a 4004L 4-2-5 rewired vol, vol, tone with 1000k ohm pots ... I was also playing FINGERSTYLE on that track ... I was doing the Entwistle typewriter hammering technique ... and picking up some harmonics in the process ... I actually get more of a treble bite with some of the fingerstyle playing that I do compared to my pick playing ... I use a big fat derilin (sp?) pick that has a softer sound than many other picks ... but the pick is good for getting clean distinct notes and it is easier to control volume and there is less need for a compressor with a pick ... and for some songs it just sounds better ...

When I used a pick I didn't like plastic picks...too much "click". I used a big felt pick - I think they are sold as mandolin picks nowadays.

Funny that you used your fingers on that one, Jeff! Image

I play with fingers almost exclusively, but some of my favorite bass players use picks.
