I,m fairly bald, though I do see the odd shot of me when I really give off a good shine.

I will try to root out a good shiny stage shot of me for the MORON LURKER

I really can't play with a pick, so I have respect for all bass players who can. Most of time I play just rock 'n roll and use a strumm technique like (the "new") Geddy Lee, so that's not much different than playing with a pick.

"I use to think pick players just sucked. "
"I used to despise pick players. "

Why? I'm curious. Is it because they play different than you do? That means they suck? I really can't imagine being so close-minded/ignorant to think that the way a person chooses to pluck a string instantly relegates him/her to suckage. And I don't care that you got a clue and "respect the people that use picks now though", I wanna know why you guys had such strong, silly opinions.
Personally, I play with a pick and always have, do I care how someone else plays, no. Why should I? To each his own.
This is such a moronic topic I can't believe I even looked at the thread, much less posted to it.

Hey Jeff! When are you going to stop showing that shiny melon of yours? Image

I only wish I could play with a pick properly. Image

Just kidding Jeff.

The mystery poster is getting close to the same class as the emp. There's no need to knock other people's playing style or appearance. Someone needs to grow up.

Jacob, nice FG! Image

2 secrets for getting on with a pick.

1. learn acoustic rhythm guitar, it'll do wonders.
2, when learning, practice crosspicking EVERYTHING for a while. You can play a pick with all downstrokes, but why waste the energy?

I only use a pick for faster songs where I want the beat right on. There is a "tiny" bit a timing issue in the beat with the fingers as they have pads that don't release the string all at once.

At least that's what I think.

Hey Jeff Rath-

I clicked on the link to your website and saw the photo of you playing what appeared to be a Ruby 4003S/5 BT. Cool looking bass. Is that what it is or am I seeing things?

And about the mystery emailer: Probably just some bored 12-year-old that wants attention. I'd laugh it off.

"Probably just some bored 12-year-old that wants attention."

That would be my guess. Who else would waste energy making comments like that. I've got enough going on in my life without worrying about what some guy on the web uses for playing his / her bass or that he may not have a lot of hair.
Who gives a rats arse?

BTW Jeff, nice MG V63 you have there! Image

I was wondering when somebody would see that ... that is me playing a midnight blue 1990 4003s5 and the picture has been modified with photoshop ... as far as I know there are no ruby metallic red 4003s5 bt basses ... but it would be cool if there were ...

Well...I almost have one! I have the only Ruby 4003S/5 that I've ever seen, and that's why I was interested. Mine is an '89 in near mint condition, but mine does not have black trim.

I use both fingers and a pick at the same time! Fingers on my right hand and pick in my left hand! Image
I find that the older I get the more tolerant I am, and now I like everybody's style, regardless. There is no "right" or "wrong" way. If you get the sound that you want then it is right!

I'm in the same boat with you, Peter. I don't think I've ever had a gripe with anyone who uses a pick to play bass, and I do find myself a lot more tolerant the older I get. At some point though, I expect I'll become a crotchety old man: "Hey you kids, get the h#ll off my lawn!"

I know that the teenage vandal that I once was probably did something much worse than send anonymous silly emails to people harassing them for playing bass guitar with a pick. So now I just have to laugh off episodes like this and consider them payback for the dumb things I used to do!
