I'm no singer!
There are 3 very good ones in my band, so I don't even try. That saves them from having to find a tactful way to tell me to stop singing. Image

"Try playing 'Turn The Page' and singing the lead vocal. That one really tests your bass playing. Sounds meaner on a Rick!!!"

I do that.. it's fun.. and it does sound meaner on a Rick.

That La Villa solo is a pain. I still mess it up. I've only known the correct notes for a few months now too.. lol. I remember one time I didn't mess up and my dad came in the attic (where I jammed) and said "You finally did it!"

I've love to play that one live, the hard part is finding other people that can play it.

Congrats mark, I had to go play the solo after reading this.. almost perfect.

Nice one Nate! It feels great when you finally nail something you've wanted to play for ages. The Rick is such a beuatiful instrument to play. Especially the sound. Its one bass that really grabs your soul. Thats why there are so many friendly people on this forum. We all support each other and thats all down to owning THE best bass available. We're a sort of family... Aaaaah! Hahaha....
If anyone needs the tab for La Villa (correct one that is), I'll try and create it and post it or e-mail it to ya. Thanks for listening.....

I was talking to Chip about how I found myself just wanted to play everything on a ric. Even if the song called for something else (dont shoot guys!). We came to the conclusion that playing a ric is not a choice. Its like crack or something. You need to play it. You no longer have that option. Its like food or water. Its do or die.

Mark, Nate hasnt even been around for ages. Hes just another Kid (no offense Nate) with to much time on his hands and an addiction he cant get over. Im the same way tho. Wouldnt we all be if life didnt get in the way?

La Villa is a song you just flip out over when you 1st hear it. I remember when i 1st heard the song. Then I replayed it like 10 times. Then I just listned to the solo about 15 mores. Couldnt get enough of it. Thats true with alot of Rush tunes. Every now and then Ill have a day devoted to Rush. You listn to one song and you get sucked in and before you know it your digging thru your cd case trying to find every Rush cd you have. Its a drug.

I agree Jacob! Every time I open the case and pick up my Rick I smile and get goosebumps. I played a gig last Saturday. My Monty Brown sounded epic. After the show I had a crowd of people around the bass saying, "That's a gorgeous piece of kit. You can really hear it down the end of the bar. It's got a very distinctive sound." The ladies love it too. Very sexy looking. I've put a sticker on my bass amp which reads - 'Groupie Assembly Point'.
Ha ha, it had to be done.....

I've given up singing Geddy's parts. In fact, for the time being, I've given up trying to sing while playing at all; I'm just not coordinated enough, and I'd rather focus on improving my bass abilities (mostly, I'd love to be able to improvise more easily . . . I'm really . . . uh . . . challenged when it comes to thinking on the spot about bass) than learning to sing along.

"Turn the Page" is a great bassline to impress people with.

I have a love/hate relationship with my bass. I needs a set up and a neck adjustment badly. My tuners stick, I could live without that big *** tailpiece... That's the hate. The love? I cannot live without that sound. I want a couple more basses with a more mellow sound, but when I play aggressive I want the aggressive Rick sound.

I went a played all the way though La Villa after posting.. I messed up a teensy bit during the solo. Image

I remember the first time I listened to this song. I was sitting in my attic thinking "This is cool" and when it got to the solo I though "What the f*ck was that?!" I listened to it about 10 times. I was so impressed.

I love most everything by Rush. I Find Roll the Bones sterile and Test For Echo boring, but the rest is good.

Robert... I love Tai Shan. Mahahahahahah!

Ladies love the Rick? I gotta get out more!!

I can't play Rush without singing. I need something else to do. Geddy's playing is great, but once you know the songs like.. I dunno.. not the back of my hand, I barely know that.. well I need something else to do.

At the risk of being shunned, most of Rush's stuff does nothing for me. Maybe three or four songs. That machine gun approach to music may be for some, but not this old codger. How can you put feeling into a note flying by that fast?

Ok, sorry, end of rant.

I used to have a real problem singing and playing. Then all of a sudden I found I could do it. Learning the bass part so it's second nature is the key. After that it's trying to remember the words! LOL!
Roll The Bones IS a bit sterile sounding. The songs themselves are great.
I love everything about the Rick. It fits me like a glove! The bridge and tailpiece is a pain in the arse, but it's part of the charm. I've owned hundreds of different basses over the years. I now own only one. It's the bass I'm sticking with to the end. If I need a mellower sound, I just play softer, and then open the throttle for the Rick roar. Lovely!!!!

Charly, if you try and play songs with that many notes and get into it, it has feeling. Image

No shunning here, Charlie! I know Rush's music is not for everyone. That's down to the individual. A lot of people hear the craziness of the music and think "Wha' f**k!"
Geddy's secret is not just the speed or 'machine gun approach', it's the groove and feel, which IS there, it's just not apparent.
Anyway it's good to rant sometimes...

"That machine gun approach to music may be for some, but not this old codger. How can you put feeling into a note flying by that fast?"

The thing is, they only ever did this on a couple of albums. I know everyone always talks about the amazingness of "YYZ" and the crazy little solos and stuff that Geddy does, but he really hasn't played stuff like that since "Moving Pictures". Geddy was never really about playing fast (honestly, he doesn't play nearly as fast as you'd think) . . . it was always more about getting into a sort of melodic "lead" groove in next to the vocals, and even then, he's gotten less and less about playing "lead bass" as the albums go by. Now their playing is a lot more about guitar and bass playing off of each other rather than lead bass groove with chords/arpeggios on top of it that was so prominent on their earlier stuff. "Hemispheres" and "Counterparts" are both recognizably Rush, but Geddy's . . . um . . . role as a bassist is completely different on both albums. These days he's more understated, more about chords and groove. But he still sings like Geddy, which definitely puts lots of people off.
