Underrated bassist

I never understood why he would tour with Dee/Nigel and then record with other guys. It wasn't till "Honky Chateau" that they recorded a full album.
We're on Youtube? Who knew?
I'll check it out and see if I remember the video.

Kevin: I thought it was Dee on Tumbleweed as well, but Ronn showed me the error of my ways.

Kevin, was the Youtube video "The EggMen at the French Legation"?
That's the one I found. I remember that, I think we used to have it on our website. Some local guy shot it and put it together. If that's the one you're referring to, it's my 4001S with the MMT paintjob on "Come Together". Thru my Marshall BassState65, miked with a 57. A great amp for recording, I swear by it, I hope it works forever.

hey Ronn: yeah, that's the one... it sounds great. i'll have to check it out again.

on the "Tumbleweed" conversation, i was a little bummed to find out most of the songs weren't Dee. but, Herbie Flowers (who's fantastic) and Dave Glover (good too!).

but, i'm just a sucker for that live three-piece.

Thanks Kevin, as the title says, it was filmed at the French Legation here in Austin. It was the French embassy when Texas was its own country, a republic that won its independence from Mexico but had not yet become part of the US. Its a great old building with beautiful grounds, up on a hill overlooking downtown. I hadn't seen that video in a few years.
"Tumbleweed" was my 2nd EJ LP, my brother gave it to me for Christmas in (probably)'73. Listening to the CD right now.

Steve, at the bottom of a Youtube page theres code for "Embedded video" I think its called, copy that, decide where you want the video on your myspace, hit Edit, and paste the code. There's Help on Youtube and on myspace if you get hung up.

Jack, that's cool they played at Shea, we did something similar tho' on a much smaller level. We played Dell(as in the computer)Diamond here, the stage was set up at 2nd base just like Shea. We were on the bill with Herman's Hermits, The Grass Roots, and The Turtles. A VERY fun day meeting all those guys and playing in front of a huge crowd. I got to talk with Peter Noone for a good long time, and he signed my Epi Rivoli bass.

Jack, is the "Glass Onion" video still on there? The video itself aint much, just a guy with a camera at a rehearsal, but I think the audio is pretty good.

It was a result of other commitments. Early on, while working in stints with EJ, Nigel (and perhaps Dee) also played other gigs (or should I saw gigs with others?)

Nigel was touring Uriah Heep while at the same time considering a band offer from Elton. Like anyone, Elton could only sustain a band after having built up enough of a following (and until then had to make do with who he could get when he could get them.)

Early on, Tom Petty nearly lost Stan Lynch (Heartbreakers drummer) to a $500 a week touring gig. I guess Tom didn't have that much to pay at the time. Elton didn't always have a massive bankroll, either.

I find it funny that Elton John failed vocalist auditions to be in both King Crimson and Gentle Giant before he started his own band. I wonder what Robert Fripp was thinking . . . no offense to Greg Lake, whose voice I love, but seriously, how do you turn down someone who sounds like Elton?
