Let's talk acoustic guitar strings

Post by loverickbass »

Is it a rule that you have to use bronzewound strings on acoustics? I've noticed on the back of my pack of Pyramid nickel roundwounds for electric it says can be used for acoustics as well. What say the experts on this. Will nickel rounds ruin my acoustic. Will there be any volume loss, etc. Questions, questions...

BTW, none of my acoustics have pickups.

I figured that I'd open up some time warp black hole thingy. Can't risk that!

And your chickens will turn into emus and kick your outhouse down.....

I guess that doesn't really matter if the sun's already exploded, though! Image

I don't know the answer to your question, JC but if you've got a cheapie acoustic (and I doubt that you have) it would be worth a try. I'm thinking that you'll lose some brightness and clarity in the sound.

No, no cheapy ones unless you consider a Comstock and Shiloh a cheapy.

Believe it or not that's the sound I'm looking for Howard. I want a more mellow sound but I don't want to lose the sustain of the rounds. I've got TI flats (spectrums) on my Shiloh now. I like the tone but after a week or so they sound like flats, dead. Another thing is that they don't make the specturms in the gauge I need for my Comstock. I've used some smaller gauge before and it's seems to knock the intonation way out on the Comstock.

I put a set of Pyramid flats on my Gibson J-185 12, and took them off the next day. It was a $32.00 disaster. On the other hand, Pyramid acoustic 12 strings are wonderful.

I have Pyramid's acoustic stings on my J-45RW and Seagull Folk.

Jere, what didn't you like about the flats?

What's the tension like on the Pyramid acoustic strings?

The Pyramid flats made a gorgeous Gibson 12 string acoustic sound like a cheap electric.
It was a mess. Amplified they were okay, but acoustically, the guitar was totally emasculated. I'm not aware of any major difference in tension. Certainly didn't cause any problems with the neck.

J.C., head over to www.juststrings.com and by a variety of strings to try. They're cheap! In my quest to find the right string, I've been through Ernie Ball, Everly, D'Addario (ack!), Gibson, Martin, SIT, etc.

Presently I'm loving the Gibson J200 strings (on my Gibson jumbo Image ) and Everly strings are working out nicely too.

Try phosphor bronze or silk and steel strings maybe.

All the best,

Noel
