I know another Issue! Jetglo owners please read...

Post by brentsimons »

Yes I am having another issue, suprise! On my new Jetglo 4003 past the 20th fret,im talking about the little "pocket" at the end of the neck where it is slightly raised up from the body.(so in front of the neck pickup.) It looks like mine wasn't finished properly. It looks like someone took a black magic marker to finsh the strip there and got some on the white binding.Which looks like whiteout by the way. There is no clear laquer on this area.So im asking other Jetglo owners do you have this same cosmetic issue. If not it goes back and I'll get ANOTHER!

Mine lacks the clear as well. You can barely tell in this picture.

I have a 1991 4003 in white.

Its not even the same colour and mines like that!

I only just noticed it, its just one of those things and not to worry. I bet many many Ricks are like this

I should note though, that all of the other 7 Rics I have owned had the clear in that spot. QC issue?

Bear with me here...are you talking about the end of the fretboard at the joint with the edge of the pickguard (as shown in Brad's photo)? If so, neither of mine (jetglo and turquoise) have the clear finish at this location. If it's the side of the neck it's there. Although it's a dissappointment in a thousand dollar instrument, if it's the only problem you have to wonder if the next one would have something else.

Yeah,
You guys have a point,if I send it back what will the other one be like. But it still burns me to pay almost a grand for it and have a flaw like that!

Brent, mine has binding there, and you can see a tiny sliver of the fretboard just below the binding, most of it is covered by the pickguard.

But then again, mine is not new. Yours is. Specifications and finishing details change. If I were you, I would not consider it a "flaw" unless I checked with the factory and they told me it's not supposed to be that way.

Yes,perhaps you didn't understand my first post.I do have the binding but it's not laquered and beneath the binding, instead of seeing the fretboard there is a black strip that looks like black magic marker, and there are a couple of black spots on the binding in this area.

oh ok........that does sound weird....try explaining that one to customer service( sarcasm)

i called them to say my selector switch doesnt stay in the neck pick up position and they said "so change it" if i did that i bet they would say i altered the bass and the warranty is void...he didnt even offer me a new one supplied by Ric at no cost.....nice customer relations!

This is an odd thread. I obviously missed an earlier thread of a problem with Brent's bass.
My 4003 has a bound end on the fretboard. Below that, there is about 1/16" of space before the top of the pickguard. Is that the spot referred to? I looked closely with a magnefying glass , mine has dark spots which are actually the dark areas of the rosewood grain. That appearance is much more noticable on my 4001v63 which has no binding on the end of the fretboard. It's very possible someone tried to even out the appearance of the wood below the binding with paint or a marker and got some on the binding. Probably removable with a small amount of solvent or thinner on a q-tip.

Regarding the pickup selector not holding in position, remove the pickguard screws and lift up the pickguard enough to expose the toggle. Bend the contact arms in a bit to tighten . It is not necessary to remove the strings to do this.

The ends of the fingerboard have never previously been finished, at least not intentionally. This has been for no reason in particular, just by tradition as near as I can determine. Anyway, as of last Friday, we are now finishing that area so that those of you with magnifying glasses will be satisfied.

Haha! Take that, guys.
A Rickenbacker bass is much like the Jaguar E car - perennially ultra-fashionable.

Take what? I take no offense with Mr. Halls comment. Some people DO get extremely carried away with minor details. I have 9 Ricks, 7 have unfinished fretboard ends. I have not lost any sleep over it. I do not consider it a flaw or anything that will affect the playability of the guitars. Every Rick that I own has flaws, some that are worse than an unfinished fretboard end. Some I leave alone, some I fix myself. I've seen guitars costing three times what a Rick costs with flaws that make you scratch your head and wonder how they left the factory that way.
