It's apples and automobiles, Wints. I wouldn't say Coldplay is a hard rock band, or similar in any respect to Queen or Zep or The Who.

It's not like the 70's where a rock band was a rock band was a rock band. Coldplay is a good contemporary band who play slightly morose music. More modern, dark Britpop. They're a bit too run-of-the-mill for me but I do like them.

Enjoy your memories.

Ditto John. I've got space in my heart for the Who and Queen (and maybe even Zep) as well as newer bands like Coldplay. Definitely an Apples and Oranges sort of moment there.

I think what Wints is trying to say is kind of similar to what I was getting at, in the 70's there were a lot more groundbreaking groups (of course, there was still ground to be broken back then..) and if they were around then, they would be an opening act at best.

But given the lack of any true new arena rock bands, they are elevated to that stature, because they can actually bring it live.
Most Top 10 artists today don't even tour because they are studio / music video creations, and if they do, they go out on a package tour and play smaller places, because they have 1 or 2 hits.

This from a guy who actually really likes Coldplay, not a comment on them as much as it is the music business.

I am British John, and I think that's why I feel the way I do. And I do appreciate the apples and oranges too!

But, when Coldplay are feted as the best of their time it simply makes me think about far, far superior studio and live bands from a generation ago that were not as feted and they would have blown Coldplay away in every area.

If you want really good modern dark music Massive Attack are without par.
What Coldplay wish they were..

Um? Why is it that people see new music as garbage? I like this, and I usually hate new music. Recently I have been getting into stuff like this band, KT Tunstall (Bought her album the other day, it's great) and Ashlee Simpson... I think Ash is there just cuz she's pretty. But just because they're not amazing like the older bands doesn't mean they're no good, or pretenders. They're good at what they do, and if they pale in comparison, well that doesn't stop them from making music and selling records. They enjoy what they do, and I enjoy what they do.

I heard Coldplay on the Grammy's and I thought Chris's constant falsetto made the performance weak. The band was great, but that delivery was weak. And his switch isn't very smooth, there's a noticeable change. But still, it was a decent performance, and he did wander the crowd.

I didn't start this thread with thoughts of them being compared to older bands, I just wanted to know why some people on here don't like them. I take it because no new music stacks up to the old stuff then it's meant as garbage. What if the music industry collapsed and all you had to hear was the same **** in your old collections all the time? I'm sure you guys would go insane. I nearly did, being stuck with Rush, Pink Floyd and Iron Maiden for months/years on end.. I had to get new music. I got these artists and the New Dave Gilmour CD (I thought it was ok.. but I think it'll grow on me). Just because he was in an old band doesn't mean this album isn't considered new music.

Sometimes threads wander off into other areas, Nate! Image

No one said they weren't good. What I am saying is that they have little competition. I've seen over 1000 concerts and saw a lot of great bands of many different styles.

Sorry, the Red Wing game is on. I'm out.

I've recently read the members of Coldplay are in the top 5 of richest under 30 year old music performers.

I kinda like them, it's like their better than most of the newer stuff. Don't think they're brilliant or anything. Radiohead is (was) better IMHO.

Lukewarm is as good as it gets sometimes.

The reason people don't listen to Radiohead more than Coldplay is because Radiohead is MUCH more esoteric, experimental, and proggy than Coldplay have ever been (except with "Pablo Honey", which was kinda junky). Radiohead is just harder to get into for most people. That being said, Radiohead and Coldplay are completely different anyway. The only similarities I can see are that both bands are British and both bands make very moody music. That's about it . . . "OK Computer" and "Amnesiac" are two of the best albums I've ever heard, though . . .

Coldplay are only feted as the best of their time by the type of people who give out Grammy's, i.e., people who are out of touch with whats *really* good in rock music nowadays.

I feel like i've had to dig deep to find what I was looking for in music, and I am satisfied.

i like 'em. this is interesting...

COLDPLAY frontman CHRIS MARTIN was inspired by German 1970s electronic pioneers KRAFTWERK when he composed the band's new album X+Y.

The YELLOW singer confesses he is hooked on the legend's unique melodies - and new track TALK even includes a Kraftwerk sample.

Martin says, "To begin with, they were a band I didn't quite get. Then suddenly one day it clicked and it was the best music I'd ever heard. They've totally influenced us on this record.

"I think if we're going to do anything after X+Y we're going to have to retreat behind a mask. I love the idea that they're Kraftwerk but nobody really knows who they are. They're like the original GORILLAZ. Or the electronic BEATLES."

Rollingstone.com has a great interview with them broadcasting online. Just go to their homepage. I like actually hearing interviews rather than reading chopped up bits and pieces.

Well there you go then Kevin. But "Influenced"?!?! They sound nothing like them and have no where near as much innovation or edginess. Stealing a melody line from a song is not being "influenced" or "inspired" in my opinion.

It's pretty much just stealing a melody line.

Led Zeppelin stole plenty of blues melodies. No one criticizes them for that (or, at least, no one that anyone listens to).

LZ stole and improved upon, IMO. Plus they had b@lls. But people did complain about their stealing blues licks. Old blues guys had their stuff stolen by Cream and the Stones and many others. But they also experienced a resurgence in their careers because of it (if they were still around).

Coldplay is kinda wussy. I think that's what they're aiming at. Wussiness.
That's ok, there's always room for another Air Supply. I liked some of their songs, too.

That actress that is married to one of them is the perfect mascot. She looks like their music sounds to me.

I'm not a Coldplay fan, in fact it took less than 20 minutes of a 'Soundstage' performance to put me to sleep a few months ago. Anyone who is into Coldplay might be interested to know that I own the matching twin to Chris Martin's custom ordered Phantom Guitarworks Mandoguitar (Mint Green with a special Phantone piezo pick-up under the bridge). They built two, shipping one to him and the other to me. Now if I could just get used to the tiny little neck...
