Blue Boy opinions

Post by ricosound »

Now that BB has come and gone as COY in 2004, what is everyone's opinion of it as collectable or desireable. It seemed at the time you either loved or hated it. I myself hated it, but will it turely be more valuable down the road? Having seen it in person, I may have softened a bit. A 4004L BB is actually kind of snazzy, as are some of the guitar models. How many guitars and basses actually got pained this color when you think about it?

RIC probably won't be able to supply production figures to the public, let alone broken down by color. I think it is safe to say that because of groups such as this and the increased visibility overall on the Internet, that instruments from the later years of RIC's "Color of the Year" program are more common than those of the first few years. The first was 2000's Sea Green which seems genuinely scarce and collectible. 2001's Desert Gold seems fairly rare, too. 2002 was Burgundy (brought back after a hiatus). 2003 (and carried into 2004) was Montezuma Brown, and they seem to be fairly common. Blue Boy is an acquired taste, I suppose, but a little harder to find than Monte since it lasted only one year. Blueburst I think was more popular, but deliveries are still pending on some (I've got a Blueburst Cheyenne on order), so the book is still open there.

I got my 4003 BB (made Aug 2002) when it was possibly a custom colour (certainly before it was the colour of the year).

Every time I take it out, it gets stared at.
as to whether people would queue up to buy them still, I dunno.

It's a couple of years old now and is staying sky blue beautifully, by the way!

I first purchased a 4003BB from Japan, before it was available in the US. It was costly to get it back over here.

That was just as lucrative as my Enron stocks..

BB is a little too pastel for my taste ...

My favorite finish that RIC has EVER offered. I wish all my Ricks were that color.

Blue Boy was specially produced for foreign sales (Japan only?) in 2002. I remembered someone here mentioning it and linking to a Japanese site. It becoming the COY the next year was not a surprise.

Yeah I like some of them. Some seem more green then others. Does anyone know what COY is for this year?

You either love the pastel shades or you don't usually. I'm firmly in the former camp along with Seagreen. Both will be collectible, the Seagreen already is. When did you last see one for sale?

Here's a GC BB that is for sale on their site for an opening bid of $905.

This will seem cheap 18 months from now...

Its hard to say. You have the sky blue ones, and then you have the later ones that have a distinct greenish hue. Which will be more desirable?? Who knows.

I have a sky blue one, and am keeping it.

Its just like Blueburst, you have the ones that dont have walnut wings, and then you have the ones that do. Which will be more collectable?? Time will tell.

Although, as far as the walnut wings go, I dont know if that really should be much of a factor,
(even though I know I know they will be). Transition bass ??

Example: consider a Jetglo or a Midnight Blue from the same era, who knows if they have walnut wings or not?? Cant tell can you? Hmmmmm....

It all boils down to what a person is looking for, and if the majority is looking for the same thing,,, then there goes the price.

Personally I think Monty Brown with walnut wings would have broken sales records

The ebay auction mentioned is why I started this thread. Wouldn't be my first choice of color, but if there's collector value here then I might pick it up to turn. I actually called the GC in question to get more details on it. Stay tuned.
