G&L ASAT Bass?

Post by lowendbob »

Anyone own one, or has played one?
I'd be interested in hearing some thoughts on this cool looking bass.

That's mine. Just got it a little less than a year ago. I love it. My first active bass, but a great passive tone as well. So versatile, so many options. You can go P-bass, J-Bass, Stingray, and all out G&L goodness. ASATs have the jazz width neck standard, as well as a fantastic bridge design. Leo's finest moment. Mine is optioned with the hand rubbed gun tint oil neck with birds eye maple fretboard. FYI, G&L is discontinuing the birds eye option for at least a year & word is that the 3 bolt "micro tilt" neck is being done away with due to cost cutting options.

I could go on, but I don't want to offend any of my Rickenbrothers here.

One word about G&Ls though - it's a CRIME but for whatever reason their resale value is not so good. They are still a well kept secret among bassists. I bought mine new & have no plans on selling it, but GREAT deals can be had on used G&Ls. Also, their L2000 bass has the exact same electronics, but has a wider neck standard & the 6 bolt neck.

My guitarist just got a G&L Comanche guitar & loves it as well.

G&Ls are fantastic instruments.

Great looking bass Chris. I really love the tele body on these. There was a Belair Green for sale on the Dudepit for $899 and I missed it.
I'm currently looking at this.

Thanks for the info.

Chris, are the Tributes any good? I hear a lot of talk dogging them like some sort of red-headed stepchild. (No offense to any redheads out there, just a phrase).

I've never actually played one. All I know is that they are made in Korea. For what you can get used G&Ls for I'd just go for one of those.

I just saw a bel air green G&L SB1 (P-bass)with some dings go for $370 on Evil Bay. That was an exceptional deal but there's always deal to be had in the $400 - $600 range.

Hi,

well I just got me a 96' L-2000 and I had the possibility to compare to a Tribute Standard (as opposed to the ,,Premium''). The Standard was very nasal sounding (well actually not really bad), but we also had some samples of other Tributes, which sounded more like the original.

Here a sample of the G&L and the Tribute Standard I had for testing:

G&L Bridge > Tribute Bridge > G&L both PUs > Tribute both PUs > G&L Neck > Tribute Neck

http://www.klauslachmann.de/gltest.mp3

The G&L E-String was a little muted on this Sample (I fiddled about the Neck PU setting since then).

So, check the Tributes first, before you get one.

Neck dive isn't really an issue. The ASATs have two pins at the butt end to combat this. There are also strap extensions made by a guy over at the Dudepit that help as well.

Or you could just get a wide, suede backed strap & you're golden.

Then again I have a T-Bird as well. You just work with it.

I had one. I wish I'd knew about the strap extension before I sold it. The neck dive drove me nuts. Other than that, its a great bass.
